LG DLG5988W Gas Dryer (NO HEAT)

My DLG5988W will spin and run through its cycles, but it will not turn on the gas burner to create heat.
The "COOLING" light stays on..
No good service techs in my area and no one will even talk to me about it.

I have the same model and problem. It is only 8 months old.

i have the same issue with my LG DLG5988W gas dryer. i get no heat, have to run the clothes through 3-4 times, the cooling light comes on, and i get a "whump whump whump" when it starts up. manual drying is even worse for me. i think i get absolutely no heat whatsover regardless of how i set the dryer.

if you view epinions on the DLG5988W dryer you'll see at least ten other people with the same issues with their DLG5988W dryers.

clearly LG has underbuilt the dryer. the whump whump whump noise at startup is apparently due to a bad roller. sometimes the drums become non-cylindrical or damaged, as the drum appears to be paper-thin (from what i've read). finally, motherboards go out consistently on this model. google for yourself and see if you see the same thing as i have seen.

i don't have weeks to deal with BestBuy's warranty service (they initially refused to lookup my receipt for the extended warranty i purchased, so now i have to find it - not nice), nor do i have the time to wait for LG to dig up another motherboard. check out the guy that went through three motherboards and it still isn't working right.

i also have the 2777 (?) washer, which dripped chlorine bleach on my clothes and ruined some of them. the washer doesn't fully empty the bleach container after each load, so i have to remove it, rinse it out, and reinsert it. nice. NOT.

i may look in craigslist for someone with an old refurb'ed maytag washer / dryer. i'm too busy to deal with long waits on service line phone calls, repair people not showing up, and bogus products.

    I fixed mine!

I went to the shop that LG told me to order parts from and bought the control boards. They were about $140.00 for both.

The unit was very easy to disassemble and the dryer works fine now.

The sensors were very easy to check using a butane lighter and a cheap Radio Shack volt meter.

I simply used to meter on ohms and warmed up the sensor with the lighter until it changed states and verified if the sensor was working or not.

After checking all of the sensing devices I determined the only thing I could not check was the control boards and replaced them.

The cooling light stays on still and I can't determine why as of yet, but I will figure it out and post the results for all of you to read.

The tub rollers were not rolling free due to hair and lint from the unit getting released within the dryer.

This stuff builds up on the axle for the roller bearing and stalls the roller wheels.

Clean out this stuff before re-assembling the unit.

Ours runs every day as we have 7 people in our family

(5 of them girls) and the poor thing just runs almost constantly.

The only thing I am not happy with is the lack of knowledge by the service providers around me on these units.

My washer has never failed me yet and it runs just as hard as the dryer.

Over all I am happy with the both of them and their performance.

When I ordered the parts they were there the next day UPS Ground!

I'm pretty sure that the cooling light is always on and blinks when it is cooling. I look at my brother's and he has the EQ bar and it acts the same.

We're having the same problem after 11 years with the machine. I've ordered a replacement safety thermostat. Does anyone have any insights to add?

Saftey tstat is open
Highlimit tstat is closed
Ignitor at 300 ohms

When I jumper the saftey tstat, I get an ignition cycle, but the flame shuts down earlier than I'd expect. Could be a draft issue as the dryer is all pulled apart? Plan is to replace the safety tstat and then reassemble and see if it works.

Before I disassembled the dryer, I did find that draft was ok and there was a good amount of air coming out the external (outside the houes) exhaust pipe.

Got mine repaired.. They replaced the gas valve. Initial review is that its not drying as well as when it was new. I will use some more this weekend to confirm.

Interesting point on the washer....i have the same one i think (2277? - can't remember either). I've probably had the same issue with the bleach and never made the correction since I don't inspect the clothes before moving them over to the dryer. I will keep my eye out for that issue.

Never had the clunking noise though from the dryer.

Actually, I've been pretty happy with the two units until the dryer stopped heating...

I talked to LG today and they told me NOT to use dryer sheets because it turns off the sensors. Hope that helps.

Not enough heat

You may need to adjust the air flow on your dryer vent.
When an LG dryer is functioning normally---the time required to dry laundry is determined by the *Sensor* located on the drum side of the lint filter housing and by the main control board.
When laundry is near dry--any Time Remaining on the control panel that is *not* needed will be eliminated---except for the last 6 minutes.
The final 6 minutes of any LG automatic cycle is for cooling down the laundry before the dryer ends the cycle.
If a dryer *counts down* to the last 6 minutes but the laundry is still not dry--the computer will allow the dryer to run until the laundry has dried or defaults (not drying within the additional time allowed).
Dryer vents that are longer than 8 feet with more than (2) 90 degree turns--can affect drying performance.
Setting the DRY LEVEL selector to *Very Dry* will solve most dryability issues. In homes with abnormally long vents--even the longer run time in the *Very Dry* setting is usually not sufficient to dry laundry loads.
Reducing the length of the vent or starting a second cycle becomes necessary to fully dry the clothing.
If a second cycle was started---only the amount of time that is needed to dry laundry will be used before dropping to 6 minutes and then the cycle will end with dry laundry.

LG gas dryers are more sensitive to venting length and air flow resistance. The gas burner can cause a rapid increase in temperature compared to an electric burner.
Rapid temperature rise in a gas dryer leads to premature burner shutdown (longer time required to dry laundry).
The gradual temperature increase of an electric element is more "forgiving" in homes where the dryer venting is less than ideal.

The dryer has an auto dry feature which never fully dries the clothes so we wind up manually setting the dry time to an hour
LG gas dryers are VERY temperamental in long vent set-ups. If fabric softener sheets are used in the dryer--clean the two stainless steel strips of metal on the lint filter housing with a SCOTCHBRITE PAD--scrub back & forth several times to remove the waxy residue from the fabric softener sheets. Most,if not all manufacturers do *not* recommend using sheets in dryers that have a moisture sensor (electrodes).
However--using a SCOTCHBRITE pad keeps the wax off those sensors which can be seen if looking *into* the dryer drum and at the lint filter housing.
If only *liquid* fabric softener is used in the washer--clean the dryer sensors once a month. Liquid softener also contains wax which can slowly accumulate on the dryer sensors from the laundry washed in the washer.

My LG Dryer DLG5988W wont always heat up. The

Dryer ignitors are not as tempermental as oven ignitors. If it glows, the problem is most likely is not the ignitor. One of the coils on the gas valve is the problem, but with LG, you have to get the entire gas valve, as the coils are not available as seperate parts. By the way, if you are testing the dryer with the front off, you have to make sure to cover the drum opening with something (like a piece of cardboard) so that you will maintain proper air flow for the burner.

LG Gas Dryer (Model # DLG5988W) is not heating, the gas is not turning on. When the dryer is turned on the ''Check Filter'' light comes on and when switching to a drying cycle the ?Cool? light is always...

The dryer has a resettable SAFETY thermostat located on the flame tube inside the dryer. LG recommends replacing the Safety and High limit thermostats if the Safety thermostat is tripped. The dryer Glow bar igniter could be bad as well as the gas valve or Main computer. Time to have the dryer serviced by a qualified LG tech. LG has factory service tech in most large cities. Give them a call at 1 800 243-0000.

Hope this helps.

Dryer won't heat

My advice is to get a gas technician. There is a resettable thermosat on the heater bank that may need to be reset. Have a tech check it out though.
