GE Security Simon 3 Wireless Home Security System Logo
Anonymous Posted on Aug 25, 2009

Hello, I just purchased a GE SImon XT system with two motion detectors and a smoke/temperature increase detector. I live in a very small house and don't need more. Everything is hooked up and works EXCEPT I need it to be able to call my cell phone and another land line. It gives me the Comm Failure message. I have gone into the Dealer status to enter the numbers. Both are simply 7 digits and I gave them both All SIA status. I have also turned off Caller Waiting on my cell, and the other phone does not have it at all. I was assured that this system would call cell phones but have had no luck. The only other thing is I can't seem to kill the beeps that notify me of the Comm failure. Help would be appreciated if you have a solution. Thank you. Clarence Cameron [email protected]

    Hi!

I have already reprogrammed the whole system, twice, and I have all the codes...dealer, installer, and master. Tonight I did a Comm Test again. It came up and said System OK. BUT my cell phone did not ring. Then, when I intentionally set off the alarms, my phone did not ring, and it reported Comm Failure again.

    Hi, again,

Comm settings, in the case of GE SImon XT, have nothing to do with ports, but Comm is short for Communication. The system is trying to communicate with my telephone. Comm Failure means Communication Failure. It has absolutely nothing to do with baud rates, either.

I am not sure whether Fixya is any help with this problem, and I am just getting simplistic answers to try to convince me that you know what you are talking about. Sorry to be so blunt, but that is the way I see it. I understood you people were experts.

  • Anonymous Aug 26, 2009

Comm failure has to do with Communication failure, not baud rates in this case. My phone is relatively new, a Motorola Rzr3. I seem to be getting very simplistic answers that really have nothing to do with my problem. I thought you people were experts. Sorry, but I am certainly not receiving the help I expected from "experts."

I don't mean to sound snippy and I don't call people stupid. I have just been bounced around too much with this issue. I would certainly assume that this system would work with land lines, and it doesn't do that either. I would also assume that the baud rate of phones is pretty standardized nowadays....especially for land lines. Why doesn't it work with land lines?

    Hi, Firesnake,

Well you certainly are trying to make
things right. However, the manual you sent is copyrighted March, 1999. I have a
Simon XT anyway, so things have changed. I have both the User Manual, which
comes with the system, and downloaded the Installation Manual, which is much
deeper and allows you to change more things. They both have copyrights of 2007. Think how much has changed in 8 years

I did check on baud rate in the manual and the only
reference to it is that it is turned on, if you are connected to a Central Monitoring
Station, and off, it you are not. As far as phones go, mine, and most of them
nowadays, automatically set the baud rate, so that is not the problem. So where do we go from here?

We are not even on the same page, and I see that many of your responses to me and mine to you do not show up in this so-called problem solving.

FIRST: I have a GE SImon XT and not a Simon 3, so we aren't even on the same page. The manual Firesnake was using was eight years old.

SECONDLY: You are not offering solutions but stabbing at the air. As explained in my original request for help, I live in a small house. That means I do not have to dial 9 to get an outside line. It means I already have all the installer codes. It means, with only two people living here, I would know, as would the other person, that the land line cannot be in use when testing the system. It means that the phone numbers being dialed are in the same area code.

THIRDLY: I purchased a brand new system, so it has a brand new battery, and that is only to use in case of power failure. There is no 9 Volt battery in the system

You people have offered no solutions. How can you when your manuals are not even up to date? I am ready to ask for a refund. Thank you.

    Hello,

First, I do not have a Simon 3 unit but a Simon XT. THERE IS A DIFFERENCE, and I don't believe you people even have a manual for the Simon XT, as you keep giving me instructions that cannot work.

I do not have my system hooked up to a monitoring service and I do not plan to do so. I want it to call my cell phone only. My cell phone does not ring when I test the system.

If I receive one more set of instructions for a Simon 3, I will demand a refund and stop payment on my credit card. This is becoming ridiculous. Read my original request. The sixth word starts GE Simon XT.

The land line works fine in calling my cell phone but the Simon XT does not call my cell phone or even a land line phone.

Use Installer code to enter the two phone numbers.

Are these number in the same area code?
Do you need to dial 9 to get out? (I know it's your home)

The default installer code is 654321, 54321, 4321 (factory default), or 321.
The default dealer access code is 654321, 54321, 4321 (factory default), or 321.
=====
Make sure backup battery is fresh. backup battery specification is (6 VDC, 1.2 Ah)
=====
Make sure 9V AC is on position 4 and 5 on strip
=====
"The only other thing is I can't seem to kill the beeps that notify me of the Comm failure."

Is it 6 beeps six beeps every minute?

I need to know the frequency of the beep you are talking about before I can help you.
Please post on the comment field and I will get back to you.

In USA,the phone company use the center two pins of the phone wire.

(center 2 for line 1 and outer two yellow and black for line two)

RED and GREEN is LINE ONE

It's also call TIP and RING.

Please make sure NO ONE is using the phone line (off hook) while you are doing the dial out comm test.

If all else fail the swap RED and GREEN wire position.
Some unit does care about tip and ring wire position.

Make sure it the line does work.

It should measure a DC voltage under 70V. *the voltage vary from how far are your from the central office.

FYI,the backup battery is a seal lead acid (SLA) 6.0V 1.2 Ah battery has a short shelf life.

Shipping and heat can damage this type of battery.

The only way is to use a volt meter to check the 6 Volt terminal will takes seconds to do.

    ==========

I mentioned 9V AC to position 4 & 5 on the strip. It is the 9V AC power pack.

NO AN 9V DC Rectangular Battery.

I'm sorry you miss interpert my comment on checking 9V AC line voltage to terminal 4 and 5.

Clarence,

If the problem is the Communication Failure, try to reprogram the Home Security System. The codes that you need are indicated in the user's manual. If reprogramming the Simon would not resolve the problem, try to get the master code from the manufacturer.

Reprogramming the device should resolves the issue.

    Clarence,

Thank you! I received your reply. For the wireless handheld, you need to check the baud rate that is set to the GE Simon XT. You have to make sure that the baud rate of the device is the same with the default baud rate that you have for your cell phone. If the two devices are using different baud rates, then it would not communicate with each other and that could be the reason why you are getting comm failure.

Here are the things that you need to verify:

    1. Check with GE if the brand and model number of your phone is supported by the Simon XT.

    2. Verify with the phone's user guide, what is the default baud rate set to your phone. Or contact the phone manufacturer.

NOTE: I'm not sure if your phone really supports baud rate. Because baud rates are being used by those devices that has SERIAL PORTS. Example: Old BlackBerry phones that has serial ports settings and PDA (Windows Mobiles) that has serial settings as well.

If your phone does not have serial port settings, then there could be an incompatibility issue between the phone and your GE device. Please confirm with the manufacturer.

I'm sorry, but Comm settings are for devices that has comm ports.

  • Anonymous Aug 26, 2009

Comm settings are related to the communication ports. Communication ports settings has a value that is called baud rate.

I'm sorry, but this is the first time that someone made me look stupid with the communications, serials, baud rate and ports. I've had handled these kinds of problem for two years.

Communication failure has something to do with the COMM PORT SETTINGS. Please refer to the user manual. If do not have the manual, I can send it to you. Just let me know!

    Clarence,

I'm sorry and I do understand how you feel. Based on the user manual that I have, YES, it should work with landlines.

    ON THE USER'S MANUAL:

    Option 04: Primary Phone Number

Add programs the primary phone number to be called when there is an alarm. The phone number will call the central station. Delete removes the primary phone number.

    Option 05: Secondary Phone Number

Add and Delete function the same as they do for the primary phone number. This number can be to a numeric pager or a central station. When using it to call a numeric pager, program this phone number with 2 pauses (press the test button to program a pause) at the end of the number. Some pagers may require 3 or 4 additional pauses be appended to the phone number.

Set Phone Mod 2 (option 13) to 8 or 9. The Control Panel will call a numeric pager twice for each report. Pagers that require the Control Panel to dial more than 22 digits will not work. Silent alarms report to a pager as an intrusion alarm. See Table 17 on page 19 for more reporting information.

I also sent you the service manual that I have. I was just thinking that we are having different manuals.

Please let me know if you have questions. Thank You!

Two separate problems: Sensor failure and phone communication failure. Most likely, you've not been hooked up to a phone for a while but the system didn't know until it tried to transmit to the monitoring center that you removed a cover on a sensor.

I can tell you how to turn off the panel beeps, "beeps" not only includes the trouble beeps that are driving you crazy, but also the beeps letting you know it's counting down, either when you've just armed it or when you come home right before the alarm sounds.

Open the cover and enter your code using the red numbered buttons inside there. It doesn't beep when you press buttons, so press them well. When you've done it right, it will tell you to choose from the Start Menu. Choose "DELETE". Then, from the Main Menu, choose "OPTION #". Then press DONE. You have now turned off beeps. You haven't fixed anything and that sensor still isn't working but it's not beeping to get your attention now. Press SYSTEM STATUS two times to hear it tell you what's going on.

To turn beeps on again, open cover, enter code and choose ADD > OPTION # > DONE.

with regard to ur communication failure... Pick up your house phone and dial the number that you send your signals to. Listen for the error message from the phone company. If you hear a fax machine tone then its trying to communicate.Make sure you have long distance carrier. If you dont hear the fax machine tone then you may have other programming errors at this point it is required to either reprogram the unit or call GE....
good luck

My smoke detector periodically goes off when I am cooking although no smoke is detected.

You most likely have an ionization type detector which detects ionized particles of combustion. This type of detector does not look for smoke density but for ionized (excited) molecules in the air. Water vapor from cooking can and will set off an alarm. Burning a piece of toast in the toaster with little or no smoke will also cause a false alarm. Try moving the smoke detector further away from where you cook. This will most likely solve your problem. Hope this helps.

How can I disconnect the motion sensor from the GE Simon 3 Wireless Home Security System?

Your wireless motion detector has been "learned" or programmed into your system. It may be difficult to remove it without a knowledge of how to de-program and you'll also need an installation program manual. A much simpler alternative is to mask off the lens portion of the motion detector. If you are able to open the case cut a small piece of cardboard or heavy stock art paper and place it in between the motion's circuit board and the lens assembly. Once reassembled this will block the detector from seeing motion. If you can't figure out how to open the case another way is to take a piece of cardboard and tape it over the lens face on the outside. Hope this helps.

I have the Simon 3 security system with one motion detector installed. I didn't set this system up but would like to add another motion detector and was wondering how hard this is to program it into the...

I don't of any system that is simpler to add a device to. The process is in the manual and is something like press "add" on the panel, follow some prompts and press a button on the rear of the motion sensor. Pretty easy if you dont have keypad phobia. Electronic version of the manual is at this location (adding a sensor starts on page 18).

How do i program a keychain and the smoke dector

to program any new sensors first you must access the installer menu by opening the front cover and using the red buttons typing in the installers code,(4321) is the default code. once that is done press the add button, then the sensor/remote button, then trip sensor(keyfob by pressing both the lock and unlock buttons together until the system beeps) or (removing the smoke detector from the base until it beeps). Once the sensor has been learned it will say keychain remote, press the sensor/remote button repeatedly until it says the correct location, then press done. then enter group code 01 for the keyfob and 26 for the smoke detector. then done.

How do i set my simon 3 motion detector?

You have to put the motion in sensor group 17. You will see this list near the back of the thick installation manual that came with your Simon. Also, when installing the motion, when it asks you to trip the button on the sensor, all you have to do is take the back off of the motion. You will hear a beep. Replace the back, and continue!
