My 7 year old (2002) craftsman riding mower has been gradually getting worse with this problem. Fire it up, make sure brake and parking brake are off, push the forward or reverse pedal and the engine strains, but mower doesn't move. I can usually break it loose by alternating pushing each of the foot pedals until it moves (with a ****!). I hadn't run the mower in a couple weeks, fired it up, and was ready to take it apart because it wouldn't move, but it finally broke loose. Once it breaks loose, it works fine. It's as if something is rusting up. Where should I look for trouble? Brake linkage?
Hi,
There is a brake lever attached to your transaxle, that when activated, pushes dowel pins which serve as brake pistons, against a brake pad which presses against a disk from your transaxle...whew. Much like a disk break on your car.
The pistons, or dowel pins may be sticking, causing you to be "riding your brake". A little disassembly and some good ole WD-40 might loosen up the bind.
Good luck!

Engine starts ok, with clutch disengaged. When I lift the foot pedal the engine cuts out. It does not try to move forward, nor backwards
