Question about Dell Dimension C521 PC Desktop

1 Answer

Data recovery I have a dell demension c521. The service department has replaced my hard drive because my system would not boot. It made a "clicking" noise. I would like to recover the information from my old hard drive but I only have a couple of days to do this and the quotes for this service is horrible. Is there away I could recover the files myself? Also, I would feel safer if the information (once I recovered and saved any information I wanted) could be wiped from the hard drive before I sent it in to Dell. PLEASE HELP!

Re: data recovery

let me explain first why it's making a clicking noise. Inside your hard drive is a mechanical arm that allows reading/writing stuff to your hard drive. the mechanical arm is loose thus making a clicking noise and might have damaged the platter. use this link for your referrence . what needs to be done to recover your files is to take out the platter and put it in a working hard drive. I'm pretty sure that you dont have the tools to do so and your gonna need a zero dust environment to do this kind of procedure. i would advise to call drive savers. 800-4401904. to set your expectations, it actually expensive but if you have critical data there then its worth it. if you need more time for back up call dell with the same case number and ask for extended return policy for data recovery. if you want to erase your files before sending it to dell then attach a powerful magnet to the drive.

Hope this helps.

Hard drive ST3160021A, error code HD521-2W

If this error is coming from the PC Doctor or When the OS (WindowsXP, if it is) then the chances are that your hard drive is failing. Back up your data immediately and replace the hard drive. Remove the HDD and connect it as a slave into another system and copy the data. Cheers - Parveen

Dell Dim C521 power button remains orange; doesn't boot

Take a look at this document from Dell. You should have some diag lights on the front of the computer, and this should help you find what is not passing post.

It will not start even after I replaced the power

Before anything else, open your case and make sure all power and data cables going to motherboard, disk drives, etc are firmly seated, and remove and re-install memory sticks in the same locations. Sometimes temperature changes inside the PC can cause these connections to loosen. If that doesn't fix it, do you hear the noise of the cooling fans coming on? If you do, check your monitor for a green light. If you get a green light on the monitor and fans are powered up and running and you get nothing else it could be a hard drive issue. Try booting from CD in that case. If fans come on briefly and then shut off, or fans stay on and you have no green monitor light, this could indicate an issue with your processor or motherboard.

How do I restore my Dell Dimension C521? I am

You need the C521 recovery disk, from Dell. Set the BIOS to boot from CD and start the system.

If it gives you the option of "Complete Reinstall" or "Repair", choose Complete Reinstall.

If it does not, or if it does not work - i.e., it always reads the disk and tries to maintain as much data as it can, you need to first wipe out the hard drive; there are many "Disk Wipe" utilities out there. I'd suggest using a boot disk such as DBAN (

Browser will not open

You could just reformat your hard drive. (This will erase all information on the hard drive.)  Get a Vista/XP Installtion disk and boot up computer, press F8 right after the BIOS screen and click CD drive and follow the steps.

Disk drive not found

It sounds like the hard drive went bad. Can you see the hard drive in the bios at all? When you try and boot the computer does it say drive not found? Try booting from the vista cd and see if you can start a new installation. If you can do the intallation the drive is ok. If not the hard drive is bad.

Raid failure

Not a lot of details, but here is some basic information, assuming you have a Dell with Integrated RAID

Dimension 9150/9200 and XPS systems have RAID, depending on the model the exact troubleshooting differs. At boot, after the Dell screen, you should get the RAID status listing. RAID 0 will either be normal or failed. Raid 1 can be normal, degraded for failed.

If the RAID array was RAID 0 and one of the drives failed, then all data is lost and you'll have to create a new array then reinstall Windows and drivers

If the RAID array was RAID 1, then you may need to add the new drive to the Array, CNTL+I or CNTL+N at boot (Depending on the system model) add the new drive to the array and reboot. If the system still will not boot to Windows, then you may have a software error too with the OS.

If during troubleshooting, the array was broken in the RAID BIOS, then the array will need to be recreated and Windows/Drivers reinstalled.
