Re: Hard Drive

Sounds like a defective drive. Hope it's still under warranty.

It won't load up it just makes a wurring noise then stops before trying again any solutions?

Hello Glen bcfc
Most likely your hard drive read/write arm is broken, you can try to smack it, you can freeze it and immediately plug it in to your PC (rarely works) or have a professional data recovery service do it for you.

I have a WD elements 250 hard drive for backing up, my computer is quite old by the way, but whenever I try to use it I receeive a message which basically says that I have to join Memeo before I can use...

Although it is not mandatory, but memeo is lite program that comes with WD hard drive that enable it to perform an automatic backup for you, so that even when you are away and not on your PC, it automatically backs up your data to your specified folder.
It is actually good to join the Memeo, but if it is made to be optional on your HDDrive, that is, if it autoruns the moment you plug it, and asks 'IF' you would like to enable/join it, then I would advise you to use it.
Hope this helps you out.
Thanks For using Fixya,.

I bought a new WD Elements 350gb external hard drive and it came with a Memeo software CD. It says to insert CD before starting backup. I do not appear to be able to use this external hard drive as a plug...

This software is not linked with the drive (with this particular drive you only get a trial version anyway). Just remove the software from your PC.

Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs > Remove Memeo/ WD Anywhere Backup.

Once you have done that, you can delete everything on it (assuming you never manually put something on it apart from the backup). If so, back it up onto your PC, another drive or CD.

Ignoring and uninstalling Memeo Autobackup software

Yes, you do not need the Memeo software as long as it is plug and play.

Cannot delete image files from the hard drive

If all else fails, read the manual. Downloaded info on WD Hard Drive and found the answer. And it didn't cost me a cent.

Canot delete images from hard drive

I have the same drive, the warning you are recieving is from Memeo the software for auto backup or autoSync, it's pretty cheap to buy the program and it works really well. So it's not the hard drive telling you that, it's the software. When you create sync plans, you can go to my computer and then double click on your external hard drive, open the sync plan and peruse your documents, photos etc. and open them up. Hope this helps

Cannot Find the Product code for registration with memeo?

that's what happens when you buy a laptop... lots of trial software that you are expected to buy if you want to keep using it. I would however check the documentation that came with the hard drive. there may be a registration number for the software there.

Computer suddenly not recognizing relatively new WD MyBook 640GB

Just a shot in the dark, but ..., shut down your computer and unplug the drive. Turn the hard drive off, then back on. Plug it back into the computer and restart. If it doesn't pop up, restart your computer this time with it plugged in.
Is there any noise coming from the drive? Is the green light on the front?
The same thing happened to me and the same drive, but 500gb. I did the above and it fired right back up again. You may have to delete the trial version from the drive if it on there, or from your computer if you had originally installed it.
