Question about Efficient Networks 5950 SHDSL Business Gateway Router

VPN client Hiya, I'm trying to establish a connection with a VPN client. The client works on my laptop elsewhere but not at home so it was suggested that the router is the problem, and probably the router's firewall is blocking VPN traffic. Apparently i need to open some ports and allow an ESP protocol but i don't know what this means or how to do it. ("You need to open ports 500 and 4500 and allow protocol 50 (ESP).") How do I do this? And on which computer, as there are 3 hooked up to the same router (my laptop plus 2 desktops). Thanks! Susan

    i am trying to reset my 3com router but it dose not reset when i press the reset button of router and not accessable through ip address how will be work on this router.

Susan, if it is true that the router's firewall is blocking this traffic, you need to access the configuration of the router and open those ports up. Every router is different though, so I cannot just tell you generic'ly how to do this... So, what is the manufacturer and model of the router?

And to Vij.. did you hold down the reset button for up to ONE minute? this is a Hard Reset and will clear the firmware of most models.. just pushing the Reset button and releasing is known as a Soft Reset, and will NOT clear the firmware...

    First, on page 3-46 you will find instructions on how to access the router.. lets start there, and make sure you can even get into it. If not, then you may have no choice but to call your ISP or the people who set this up and have them do it for you.

    See if you can get in through the Web Interface and if so, then we will try to open some ports.

Base from the description of your problem this issue has something to do with the firmware of your router, so to correct the problem do a firmware upgrade on your router or if there's no updated firmware you just flash the firmware to it then check if the problem is already fix after doing that.

you should but the question is: are you are authorized?
my understanding is that vpn connections usually required a client and you definitely need authorization configured on both ends.

attempt to configure the client in xp as explained here
consult with the adminstrator of your vpn lan site if there are any port forwarding that you may need to configure on your router.

The UDP flood suggests a possible DoS (Denial of Service) attack which hoses your connectivity but doesn't harm your PC or change anything. Can you surf the web through the Belkin okay when not VPN ing? Is it just your VPN connection that doesn't work? Do you get any message or dialog boxes popping up when you try to connect saying anything about the remote host not reachable or you username/password is not valid. You VPN client should be giving you some indication of the failure to connect. Any other PC at home to VPN to work with? Also possible that your PC has been denied access to work because your PC caused problems on the corp network. You probably would not be aware of that. Is there an IT department at work to support you?

I have the same model router at home, just checked the settings, you should be able to pass through the router with a normal vpn connection.

If you use a special VPN client, like a CheckPoint Secure VPN client, the router might block it. Also you might want to ask your office's sys admin if you are not blocked by the firewall or something similar. Your office's sys admin will prolly solve your problem since he knows your work network's configuration and setup and how to connect to it.

Resolutions: 1) if you have firewall, open TCP Port 1723, IP Protocol 47 (GRE). 2) make sure you can reach the VPN server by using ping. Sometimes, poor connection can cause this issue too. 3) You may need to updated firmware on a router or firewall if other OS (win9x/nt/me/w2k) works except XP. 4) The VPN server may not be able to get IP from DHCP for the VPN client. So, you may want to re-configure VPN host networking settings. For XP pro VPN host, go to the Properties of the VPN>Network, check Specify TCP/IP address and Allow calling computer to specify its own IP address, and uncheck Assign TCP/IP addresses automatically using DHCP. 5) Make sure no other secure software blocks your access, for example, if you use Norton secure software, you may need to add the remote client's IP so that the client can access. 6) If your VPN running on a Windows RRAS with NAT enabled, you may want to check the NAT settings. 7) If you can establish the VPN from the desktop at home but not from the laptop. Make sure no security software like Microsoft OneCare software that blocks the GRE.
