Question about iRiver iFP-795 MP3 Player

1 Answer

Ifp 795 doesn't start

The player just stopped playing with some garble characters appearing on screen. I changed the battery, but the player refuses to start up. Occasionally when it starts, it doesn't get past the opening screen and switches off by itself. Sometimes, it gets past the opening screen, but when I play a song, it displays some garble characters on screen and swtiches off in about 4 seconds.

can you suggest a solution please?

    Hi Frit,

Thanks for applying your time to my problem.

I am aware of the procedure to upgrade the firmware.

But, my problem is that the player doesn't start at all. Which means I can't connect it to the PC and so cannot upgrade firmware. I'm not worried on losing the songs on the player as I have backups. But the player doesn't start (blank display with/without Hold switch when I press Power-on button).

If I change to a new battery, it starts sometimes but switches off in 4 sec, and then I suspect the new battery drains down, so that the player doesn't even give the Hold-display when I press the power-on button with Hold switch in place.

Any more ideas? I too love this model.

    Hi Frit,

You must be wondering what happened at my end. I'd sent my player to the local iriver service center. They seemed to check it and find all ok inside my player. So they can't determine why the problem exists.

I'm at my wits end. Before sending the player to them, I'd attempted what you suggested, but although the player does turn on and I connected it to my notebook with iriver Music Manager loaded, the player isn't recognised, and the PC prompts to install drivers for it. So, I can't install new firmware.

Anything more I can do before giving up entirely?

Best Regards and a Very Happy New Year

    Shaleen

Go to iriveramerica.com and find the product support page. Download the latest firmware. You'll need to save it to your computer. If you don't have the iriver music manager on your computer you will need to download that also and install it.
Open the music manager, click on the format icon and re-format the player. You will lose all your music but you can easily re-load it later. After formatting, click on the firmware upgrade, open the new firmware that you downloaded and your player will be restored.
You should be able to find these instructions in much more detail on the iriver product support page.
And if you can't figure all this out or you just don't want to, contact me and I'll buy it from you. These little 795 players are in high demand.

Sounds like you have a little more complicated problem then. The flash drive is most likely corrupted. Unless you can get your computer to recognize it you may be out of luck.

Here's a few things to try tho.

Connect it to your computer without a battery in it.

Remove the battery and leave the player for a few hours. Then connect to computer, install a fresh battery and try powering on.

You said you managed to get it to turn on and start playing a song once. If you can manage to do this again, immediately connect to your computer with the music manager program already open and running.

There is a little watch battery soldered inside these players to retain memory. Once that battery dies, the player is pretty much toast unless you have the expertise and know how to open the player up and solder a new battery into place. That may be what has happened.

If nothing works, i still might be willing to buy it from you and use it for parts. I have a few of these laying around with various issues.

    Good luck!

Software for ifp-795

Hi,
There isn't any need for any extra software with this unit. Once you plug it in to the computer you can just drag and drop the mp3's onto the "drive" or player.
Thank you,

Do you have the music manager program in your system? If not, try to install it from your installation cd. If no cd, go to the iriver website and download and install the appropriate model software, in your case (ifp-795)
