I am running windows xp home edition, dell b110 desktop, actualy the lemon of the 2006 models as it got a new hardrive at 6 wks and has been restored back to Dell original 3, maybe 4 xs so has been a real challenge. The alerts /sounds have always been the typical windows wav and outlook express has just been the ding wav but no matter how I change the settings there are no closing or opening sounds or OE email notification, no pop-up alerts do have plenty volumn and yahoo messenger alerts are working. I will try deleting anything that is saved in the control panel /sounds options and see if I can start over, maybe with windows default?? thankx for help.

You might want to run sfc /scannow (also see here) to check the integrity of your system files. (Those are the system sounds that won't play.)
Here, here, are a couple of sound troubleshooters for xp. Here's a link for Vista.
It might also be worth it to have a look in your Event Viewer and see what kind of errors or warnings are reported there. And check the device manager, for sure, to ensure that your sound hardware is working correctly.

I hope this information allows you to resolve this issue. If you need further assistance, please post back with a comment to this thread.
If I've managed to answer your question or solve a problem, please take just a moment to rate this post....thanks!

Testimonial: "when I said delete I was meaning I was going to delete the sounds that I had saved for options/programs and just click in windows default for sound."

Try this, go to Start>Run and type dxdiag. This will bring up a diagnostic utility that you can use to help you troubleshoot the sound in xp. It may indicate what components are not working correctly. You will probably have to reinstall the drivers.

Another thing to try is to visit Windows Update, run a custom scan and see if the update offers you drivers or other patches for the sound...

Try not to just start deleting files, unless you understand what you're doing.

In any event, set a restore point and use a utility like Erunt to back up the registry before you delete things.

    Good luck.

No sound in chat rooms with windows7 64bit

With the Yahoo! Messenger application, you can chat with friends and family over the Internet, and you can also use the contacts you have from your Yahoo! email account. In addition, the application allows you to enter chat rooms, play games, share pictures and transfer files. Using the preferences on your Yahoo! Messenger, you can enable the application to play a sound when you receive a new message, and you can also have your own customized sounds played.

1.Open the Yahoo! Messenger application on your computer. Click on the "Preferences" option from top toolbar menu.
2.Click on the "Alerts and Sounds" option from the Preferences window on the left side of the application.
3.Click on the box next to the "Enable alert sounds" fields and then click on the "I receive a message in Yahoo! Mail" option below the "Alert me when" heading.
4.Click on the box next to the "Playing a sound" field below the "Alert me by" heading and then click on the "Browse" button.
5.Select a sound file from your computer that you want to be used with Yahoo! Messenger and then click on the "OK" button.
6.Click on the "OK" button again and the sound you choose will be enabled in the Yahoo! Messenger application.

I hope you find it very helpful. Thanks.

Is yahoo have a mail alert sign or alarm.

Yes, Yahoo messenger does have alerts. You can mange your alerts when you are logged in Yahoo messenger by clicking on the "Messenger" menu and clicking "Preferences". Alternatively, you can press Ctrl + Shift + P. When you are in "Preferences" window, click on "Alerts & Sounds." You can enable or disable alerts. See the screenshot given here for further information.

No sound alert on incoming messages in Skype 4

Here is my experience. This drove me nuts for a while but it works now.

I had the same problem with 4.0.0.206. I played around with mute/enable in Options/sound and Options/audio settings. I changed to ringing to my laptop speakers and now it all works. Go figure.

Yahoo im

You can check the Yahoo IM preferences, enable sound alerts for different events.
Navigate to Messenger Menu---> Preferences---->By default, yahoo alert for an instant message is just a small popup sound which can hardly be heard. You may also enable message flashing so that the messages you receive keep on flashing till you read them. You can also change the default sounds for all the events though.

thx
