I'm not sure what you mean by "loose". Does it still take good pictures? If not, then Sony is correct...the camera was introduced in 2003 and the cost of repair would far exceed the camera's worth.
The DSC-F828 doesn't have a black&white mode. However, just about any photo editing program will have the ability to convert color photos to black&white. Doing so on a computer will give you much better control over things like brightness and contrast than you would get if you just let the camera do it.
