HP 2338H Monitor Goes into Sleep mode and...

I just bought this computer I have an HP 2338H monitor and it goes into sleep mode. I have to power the computer off and back on to get it back. Then the computer says that it did not shut down normally. Duh of course not...I have noticed that sometimes the screen flashes but since I'm not sitting in front of it I was not sure exactly what was going on. Help
