Run the
cleaning process on the printer first. Then test it again, the cleaning process
should not care what the state of the ink is reading. If the problem is still
there…Turn over the ink cartridges so that the gold strip is facing up and set
them on a stable surface. Then, dip cotton swab in distilled water and clean
off the top and sides of the ink cartridges, but be careful not to get the gold
strip wet. Dry off cartridges with a paper towel and then with a cloth clean
the back of the carriage and then replace the cartridges in the printer.
Warning: Do not leave the ink cartridges outside of the cartridge carriage for more than a half hour, as the ink will begin to dry.

I am printing a brochure using OpenOffice. It has 58 pages, printing two pages to a sheet of A4 (portrait)The front pages come out Ok but when I flip them to print the back pages I just get a a meaningless mottled effect. Can you help?
