Question about BellSouth 1040 2-Way Radio

1 Answer

Sending/Receiving My Bellsouth 1040 radios might be getting a little old but they are well cared for and in good shape. I haven't used them in awhile but always take the batteries (non-chargable) out when I store them for any length of time. Recently I took out the radios, installed fresh batteries and tested the sending/receiving functions. Nothing! I could hear the mike being opened but no voice came over. I also could not send my voice to the other radio. I tried again with a third radio owned by a friend with the same result. Ordinarily I would say that maybe one of the radioes has gone bad but both going at the same time seemed a little odd. I think it may be a setting on the radios that I haven't figured out yet - or both radios have gone bad. Any help with this one?

Tried the monitor buttons - no results. Could they have developed corrosion somewhere on the pc board or connections? I hate to fuss over relatively inexpensive radios but they seem in such good condition otherwise. I hate to toss them without trying for a solution.

Make sure they're on the same channel. The mics could have come disconnected, but that's highly unlikely. Look for a button labelled "Monitor" on any of the radios. It might be stuck, if there is one. I don't think the problem would be in settings, as long as they're on the same channel. If they still don't work, you should probably consider a new set. I think you can pick up a new pair of Motorolas for around $40. Good luck :)

I know what you mean about not wanting to toss them. I hate throwing away things like that.. But you're right, there could be corrosion inside, especially if the radios were stored in humid conditions. You could try opening them up and having a look inside, but that would be a last resort before you throw them out, as you might not be able to get them back together properly again.

I have a set of Bellsouth walkie talkies and on one, all though I can change the volume settings, I can not get it loud enough to hear unless i put it tight to my ear

Very likely a blown speaker. Those speakers do not stand up to weather well and may have gotten wet. The only solution is replacement. Since you cannot buy a speaker, you would need to buy another radio and use it for parts. Better yet, buy a working radio and use you old one for parts.

Check the settings and see if it went into "memory" mode. They may call it somthing else in the menu so check the manual if you have it.

You may have one of them set to the wrong DPL code. Most FRS radios have a channel number and another number that corresponds to a DPL code. Try looking in your owners manual for this feature it may be known under a different description as each company calls it different things. DPL, PL, private code, user code etc.

BellSouth FW13ZHHS Two Way Raido Instructions

Hello AlBitz,

The Bellsouth FRS radios were actually made by a company called US Electronics. Their branding agreement with Bellsouth ended in 2005 but they are continuing to sell radios that are very similiar to the ones they made under the Bellsouth name. These radios are marketed under the name Xact.

Your best bet to locate a manual for the Bellsouth 1061 radio may be contacting Xact. Their website is located at: http://www.xactcommunication.com.

Receiving error

Ok...so I fixed my own problem. I had printed out a system data sheet on my fax machine and found out that the "error" was in under sending confirn, so I went into my menu to the sending confirm section and turned it off. Then my boss tried sending the fax and it came through like nothing was ever wrong...I think the other day when my Iguana got in my office, he must have done something, as I found him perched on my fax machine....hmmmm. Thanks for the follow-up email.

1-the line itself could be bad ( not the jack where you nplug in the wall) the cord itself could have a break in it. try changing the cord cost $1.00 at a dollar store
2-if the memory is full after receiving a lot of faxes, check the memory when it happens
3-if the toner is low it will store it in memory, by you checking the machine turning off and on removing toner etc... you end up resetting it for awhile.

2-way radio

I have a model 1018 bellsouth 2-way. Are you talking about the tone that lets the other person know it's okay to talk? If so, turn the unit on---press the (fun) function button until you see the RGB abbreviation flashing. ***about three times on mine***** You should also see displayed ---ON---. Using the channel changing button---press it once. The ON should change to OFF.

Hope this helps. Have a great day.
