Re: Using hard drive on a Mac

Have you accessed it in the disk utility? ( applications-utilities-disk utility) try running repair disk first (select the drive first though) then repair permissions (on both the external and main drive)

Re: Using hard drive on a Mac

If the drive is empty, use disk utility to reformat the drive as HFS+. DO NOT DO THIS IF YOU HAVE DATA ON THE DRIVE!!! :-)

For the MAC to see a PC formatted hard drive, format the hard drive using the PC but format the hard drive in FAT32 not NTFS.
You will then able to transfer files between the PC and the MAC.
The MAC will copy file to the hard drive in PC file format.

Smartdisk 160GB Crossfire hard drive

I had this same problem. One option is to open the smartdisk up. It should have a seagate ata drive inside. Attach it to a computer as a slave drive. Your dive will appear as a secondary drive on your computer. you should be able to get all your files off the drive. If your worried about voiding your computers warranty you can buy a usb adapter to make the drive act as an external drive. I highly recommend never using this drive again. I used it as my main hard drive and it fried on me. If you plan on getting rid of this drive let me. I need the circuit board to get my music files and portfolio off my failed drive. Thank you.

What to do with unreadable but recognised hard disk segate 400GB

After data is recovered, it should be moved to another drive to keep safe. The drive that was recovered has to be reformatted and checked for errors before storing more data.

You don' t say what OS or even type of computer (PC, Mac, Windows XP, 98, vista etc) you are running, or whether the drive has been used before. If it's a new drive then it probably needs formatting, so you can allow the OS to do that. If it contains data that you need then DO NOT allow the OS to format it.

If you know it is formatted & contains data, then it sounds like the OS is not recognising the format. Windows 98 typically won't recognise NTFS disks formatted on Windows XP for example or Linux Ext3/4 format disks won't be recognised by Windows. In the latter case, you can download a free driver which will do that for you - google Ext 4 and Windows.

From apple to windows

You did not mention which Windows or Mac version you are running, but "in the good old days", all I did was to format the drive either as FAT32 (in Windows) or as MS-DOS (in Mac).
Keep volume/folder file names following Windows naming rules.
Don't erase any of the invisible files that will be visible on the opposite system when running. MP3's will write/read fine for both OS.

Seagate 160GB SATA Hard Drive Installation.

Hi, Was the original 20Gb HD also a SATA or was it installed as an IDE? Try installing a fresh clean Windows rather than the restore disc. However, you will need the drivers for the SATA 160Gb and press F6 when Windows installers ask you to. Post back how things turn up or should you need further information. Hope this be of some idea/help. Good luck and kind regards.
