The reason why your internet light is red for the actiontec gt701-wg is because it is not yet configure. You need to access the gui of this router. enter the username and password for your internet connection. You can contact your ISP provider so they can walk you through for the steps on how to configure your new router.
The old router has green light because it was already configured by your ISP provider.
Yes this is a normal method to setup a wireless network. To set-up and secure the wireless router from unauthorized access, follow these steps :- 1. Connect the wireless router to your computer with a LAN cable. 2. Start your browser and enter the router's configuration URL IP address. 3. Enter the router setup, login and password 4. Change the admin password 5. Go to the wireless settings and change the default SSID and turn off SSID broadcast. 6. Setup encryption key the strongest is WPA2 (if not then WPA). 7. For further security measures - turn on MAC address filtering and enter the MAC address of the wireless cards on the computer/s you want to connect to this wireless router. 8. Record the settings you have made and keep it in a safe place and Save the settings. 9. Configure the wireless cards on the computer/s with the SSID and encryption settings of the router. 10. Remove the LAN cable between the router and the computer then the computers should be able to connect to the router.
If the DSL light is blinking it means that there is no DSL carrier signal to your modem. Check the phone line and make sure you have no open lines and filters are on all the devices hooked up to your phone system except your modem. You can check for an open line by hooking up a phone to the phone line going into your modem and listen for a dial tone.
check the following in order
1 check that all of the cables are securely plugged in, if you find any loose plug them back in, you may need to powercycle the router afterwards though if the router is subsquently plugged into another unit down the chain power off both units turn them back on turning on the actiontec last.
2 if your ISP requires logon details to be included in your router, double check by viewing your router settings renter them if you are unsure.
take a wire and carefully touch it to the two attachment points of the copper ring on the left side while it is plugged in. I first froze my system for 15 min then thawed out and touched the wire as instructed and all works fine.
To open the box remove the clear soft contacts on the bottom, should be four. Using a small philips remove them and pull the box in two. Then fix according.
It sounds like you don't have the units connected properly. Make sure you have a cable(wired) from your ethernet card on your pc connected to a wired port on the router. Then plug your router from its yellow port into the modem. Make sure your modem is connected to its Internet interface. Plug in your modem and wait 60 seconds for it to power up. Then power up the router.
At this point you should be able to access the router with the supplied installation CD. Run the setup assistant and it will define your wireless network. When you are through you should have internet access through the wired network. When you are finished you should be able to use the wireless network assuming you have the card installed correctly and the software for the card correctly installed.
In looking on the internet the unit is a DSL gateway. Trying to use it on cable internet is not a real good way to set up your network because I believe the router is waiting for a DSL sync before the services turn on. I would spend the money and pick up a Linksys or Netgear G router, there around $50.
