Compaq Evo memory problem

Hi there, I've just bought a Compaq Evo that won't boot.

It gives me a beep code of 1 short two long, and flashing numlock key, which according to the BIOS manual indicates a memory problem of some kind.

It has two sticks of DDR in it, which I pulled out and replaced with a stick from a working machine - same error. I also put the ones from the Evo into my other, working machine, and they worked fine.

Any ideas how to diagnose and / or fix this problem?

Cheers, and thanks,

Cam

Just thought I would update as I have just had the same problem.
I turned off the computer, disconnected the hard drive and processor and then reset the Cmos. Reconnected everything and started the machine up. Don't know what it did but everything works fine now.
Keep in mind you may not reset while power is connected to the computer, could damage the mobo.

My hp-compaq dx2300 microtower restarts automatically when working. It is installed on win xp sp3. Please let anyone help if solution is known.

Hi names Rui, i question for you does your PC give a beeping sound when you turn it on? if does can you tell me how many beeps it gives?

if it give a designated number of beeps this might be the problem i will give you a chart so you can differentiate the warning beeps you hear.

warning beeps:

1 Short Beep DRAM refresh failure
2 Short Beep Parity circuit failure
3 Short Beep Base 64k RAM failure
4 Short Beep System time failure
5 Short Beep Process failure
6 Short Beep keyboard control gate A20 failure
7 Short Beep Virtual mode exeption failure
8 Short Beep Display memory read/write test failure
9 Short Beep ROM BIOS checksum failure
10 Short Beep CMOS shutdown read/write error
11 Short Beep Cache memory error
1 long, 3 short Beep Conventional/Extended memory failure
1 long, 8 short beep Display/Retrace test failed

hope this will determine the problem if none of this warning beep is heard try reseting the power botton in you PC cause sometimes the power botton will loosen cause of continuous use of the botton.

hope this will help you.

Motherboard flashes 8 yellow lights then one green light, what does this mean

8 beeps=Your video card isn't working. Make sure it is seated well in the bus. If it still beeps, either the whole card is bad or the memory on it is. Best bet is to install another video card.
1 Long, 8 Short Beeps=Display / retrace test failed. Reset the video card.

Installed new DIMM memory in Compaq D510 CMT - puff of smoke

Here's a full list of the POST beeps for your computer:

http://bizsupport1.austin.hp.com/bc/docs/support/SupportManual/c00704816/c00704816.pdf

That flashing numlock and beep pattern says there is no system memory. When you let the smoke out before it might have been fatal for something. It could be the memory itself is dead, or something could have been damaged on the system board that is keeping it from detecting memory. The only way to know for sure is to try another stick of known good memory.

There's also the possibility you used the wrong kind of memory when you added the new part. Here's a link to the hardware guide for the computer:

http://bizsupport1.austin.hp.com/bc/docs/support/SupportManual/c00706221/c00706221.pdf

You can use the information to be sure any memory you get is supported.

Hope this helps you. Good luck getting the computer running.
