Hi all - I have a Western Digital 500GB MyBook external drive (not sure
of model, but it's black with a blue circle/light on the front - hth)
that will no longer mount on my MacBook Pro. I used it successfully for
a year or more, but it's now just an expensive paperweight. It fires
up, lights up, spins, etc. but my Mac no longer recognizes it - doesn't
show in Finder or Disk Utility.
This problem started a couple weeks ago - the first sign of trouble was
that the disk would randomly unmount and I'd get the error msg, "You
must eject this drive before disconnecting it ... " I could unplug the
power and USB cable and it would re-mount, but then would disconnect a
while later. That went on for 10+ days or so - now I can't get it to
mount at all ...
Any thoughts/help on this would be appreciated. TIA!
Have you tried it in another computer? I think these kind of problems can sometimes be caused by USB voltage problems, especially if your MBP has an old battery (I believe the battery is used as a power buffer to keep size of transformer down). If that doesn't work, see if you can find someone with the same HDD power supply and try switching that over. Failing that it's data recovery, you may be able to do this yourself by switching the actual hard drive into a new enclosure.
