Question about Dell Inspiron® 1501 (N11157) PC Notebook

Inspiron 1501 not booting Windows

I was searching book titles on Amazon and Ebay last week and my Inspiron 1501 laptop froze up for about 4-5 minutes, so I turned off the power. Now, whenever I try to reboot, it won't and I keep getting a message that tells me that the operating system can't be found.

I'm freaking out because this is my work computer and I can't do my job from my Mac.

I've spent some time online and on the phone with Dell support, but to no avail. They had me remove and put back the hard drive, which didn't change anything. Eek!

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm not so computer savvy, so explaining it to me like I'm 6 years old would really help.

Re: Inspiron 1501 not booting Windows

OK! Here's the 6 year old explanation. When the big hand is on the 3 and the little hand is on the 6 it's 3:30! <Grin>

Sorry 'bout that, but couldn't resist.

First, do you have a recovery disk(s) that would allow you to do a refresh on the operating system? It sounds like the O/S got trashed somehow. If that is the case, you'll have to find a way to "untrash" it. Maybe you could borrow a version of the current O/S from a friend for long enough to get this accomplished?

Another thing that you might try is to power down, remove the memory module(s), replace them and cross your fingers. It may work, or may not, but is a quick and simple thing to do.

Motherboard dell inspiron 1501

From a quick search on the internet,

Dell Support > Inspiron 1501 Notebook PC > Service Manual,

Don't forget to use an ESD wrist strap, and have it's alligator clip attached to a good ground source.
Use a multi-compartment container for the various screws you will remove.

Label each compartment for the area the screw/s come out of.
SOME screws look VERY similar to other screws. DO NOT mix them up.

Have you tried booting into safe mode or last known good configuration?

You can access the windows boot menu by pressing/tapping the F8 key as the computer as it boots.

If none of those allow windows to boot and you still can't see the error message, I suggest reinstalling your OS over the copy that is already installed.

Please let us know if this solves your problem or if you would like further assistance.

Try booting the pc into safe mode with networking. If it will boot to safe mode then all is not lost. If it won't boot to safe mode, try to boot with the windows disc and go to the restore screen or go to the repair option and try to repair the windows startup.

Take the battery out and try with AC only, if no change, then you will likely need a motherboard replacement

Do you mean to say there's No power or wont boot into Windows ?
Did you check your RAM and made sure the're properly seated ?

Try tapping on F8 while rebooting to go to Safe Mode and selecting "Last Known Good Configuration"

If you would like to perform a system test consult the Dell Support site with full instruction

Black screen on 1501 Inspiron laptop

I wen t to Dell website and did search for 1501 Inspiron laptop. After I found the product, I entered "black screen" and did another search. The search brought up 3 problems. One of them had several of the problems I had encountered, including black screen, horizontal lines, blue screen at times.
The solution was to download and update my Video driver. This seems to have solved my issues.

If you have forgotten the Windows password:

A forgotten windows password can be problematic.

If you have windows XP HOME edition, boot to the SAFE MODE (Press F8 during boot to get startupmenu) select the ADMIN account (Password should be blank) Once inwindows, go to Control Panel, User Accounts and reset the password onthe effected account.

If you cannot perform the above, then this link has the best listing of recovery suggestions I've found:

If you need to change a forgotten BIOS password, you will need to contact Dell Technical Support for a BIOS Master Password.
