Question about Hard Drives

1 Answer

Slave jumper setting

Trying to move files from old PC HD (maxtor 91360u4; win 98) to new PC w/vista. The old HD has no jumper settings printed on it and I've tried every combination possible. All but one of the settings try to boot to the '98 os and end with a message about insufficient memory (not possible w/this new PC). Only one (bottom/right-horizontal) will boot to VISTA and, after it's up, I can't find the old hd listed anywhere on it (win expl or controlpanel/system files). Or, is there another, relatively easy way to retrieve about 7 gb of files?

Take Three: I have an older Maxtor Hard DriveTake Two: I have an older Maxtor Hard Drive (Model 90645D3). I need to transfer some files from it (Win98SE) to new hard drive (WinXP Pro). I asked earlier and...

Jumper off will set the drive to slave. If you can connect both drives to the same ribbon cable with the master on the end & the slave to the second connector. Look at your bios as win is booting up to see if shows the drive as slave, you will not be able to copy windows as a operating system off of the drive, but should be able to copy files.

Good luck on your endevors.

PC will not see Maxtor 80GB DiamondMax Plus 9 as seconary slave.

Two thing,

First, never use a Maxtor HDD as a slave to a CDROM/DVD, doesn't work and tends to cause stability issues. So try swapping the jumper on the CD/DVD to slave and setting the Maxtor to Master, this should get it working.

Second, if it is showing up as 33GB, you have the Jumpers set to limit capacity(designed to avoid troubles on older systems. If this is the case, you likely have a single jumper in the center row of pins between the power and data cables. If it only works as master at the moment, then you likely have the neter row(limit size pins) and the one closest to the data cable(Master Pin) both plugged in.

Change your DVD/CD to slave, remove the limiting jumper and ensure the Master jumper is installed on the Maxtor, then be sure the end connector on the ATA(likely marked master) is plugged into the Maxtor and the middle connector(Slave) is plugged into the DVD/CD, this should have you all fixed up.

Hope this helps FixYa,

Setting Maxtor HD as Slave.

First "easy" one I've had in hours....

Just pull the J50 pin out of the jumper block and PRESTO it'll be a slave the OFF position literally reffers to having the J50 pin off of the hard drive. Just a note though, I highly recommend using a peice of scotch tape to affix the pin to a nearby surface cause there a real pain to find if and when you need em again.
