I have a Victor Corvette 400 rotary lawn mower with honda engine ccv135 .New fuel,Sparkplug looks ok.Itwill only start when I spray into the carby then it will only go untill the autosstart runs out. do these motors have points? Much apreciated.Trevor
If this unit is very old, it probably does have points. But most are electronic. However, even if it does have points, the points is not the problem here. If the points can fire the primer and run until it dies, then i suspect you have a carb problem. If it lacks either compression, spark or gas you'll certainly will have an issue. I don't think you have a compression or a spark problem. Like i said, if it fires up to burn the priming then again i'd suspect the carburetor. Sounds like the center jet in the center leg of the carburetor internally may have a little dirt or such in it.
Hope this helps.
Good luck

If you have a spark then the sparkplug is ok.Take a look at the carburator, mostlikely this is dirty inside and blocking the fuel from getting in to the engine
Glen make sure that the coil is spaced properly first. Also check that the wings are coming out properly when you pull the cord. You can check by removing the puller and pulling it while looking to see if the wings appear. If they dont give them some lube spray.
Hi Robert, I'm not usually a Lawn Mower Expert, but I think I may have an answer for you. Assuming your craftsman rotary lawn mower is similar to this self propelled craftsman mower (they should have the same basic parts), this video should help!
Check for spark. Pull the plug and look at it. Make sure it isnt oil or fuel fouled.
Check the airpath and make sure the filter isnt blocked.
Check the fuel. Make sure you have clean gas in the float bowl. You can drain the carb without taking it off the mower. The bottom of the bowl should have a drain bolt in it. Remove the bolt completely and fuel free flow for a 30 seconds to make sure you chase off any water or dirt that may be in the bowl.
You may want to check compression. This mower is 19 years old and may be losing compression to the point where it wont draw enough fuel to run. Look for at least 100-110 PSI. Anything less you should consider adjusting the valve clearances to see if that helps. If not you probably need a new mower. Since repairs like this are very expensive.
A lawnmower engine has to have 4 things in order for it to operate properly (besides good compression). 1. Clean oil ...straight SAE 30 in summer 2. Clean Air (Good Filter) 3. Clean Fuel (no older than 30 days or so) and lastly a strong spark..blue is good, yellow is weak. It may run without these 4 things up to par, but not for long! Start looking around on the mower and try to determine if these things are OK for starters.
check your sparkplug clean or replace, also crank it several times without sparkplug in it to blow out the cylinder, did you have it on it's side for anything?
I have the GVC160 motor....same problems....just found this info (see link),...and it turned out that Honda used a NGK spark plug that was defective,....I couldn't believe that is all it was...after changing the carb (new),...adjusting valves....etc.. I just went down and bought a new spark plug.....and it runs great!! ---- BEFORE go thru all of the advice and look at most other Honda web
info.....go and buy a brand new spark plug and start with that! It
appears Honda used a NGK spark plug in the past that fails after some
time....giving the syptoms of problems with the carb, sticky valve, etc.
Do not try to clean and use the old spark plug!!
Check this out....it was the answer I was looking for after hours of
work, reading, and talking to Honda dealers - http://forum.doityourself.com/outdoor-power-equipment-small-engines/261743-honda-lawnmower-starting-then-cutting-out.html
If it sat for years then its likely a fuel problem. Verify this by spraying a prime in the carb and trying to start it. If the unit starts then its a fuel problem. I would drain the tank and replace with fresh fuel, remove the carb and clean it.
Test for spark by placing a screwdriver into the spark plug wire and holding it close to a bolt on the engine. should see a spark (blue). If not, problem is likely the armature (coil). The coil is located under the engine shroud and held in place by two bolts. If you replace this part, (normally $30 to $40) you must ensure a proper air gap. Auto parts stores have inexpensive repair manuals to help.
