External Drive not recognized

My Book WD Premium Edition will not show up with a drive letter. Under disk management it is there and if I click on it it says it is connected and working properly. Without a drive letter I have no way of accessing it. I am running XP with a 2.0 usb. Can anybody help?

Share the same problem with a Western Digital Mybook Essential 250 gb after it functioned long enough to move all my photos etc.

Have since updated my BIOS,cleaned my registry with Regcure and tryed all the suggestions from this forum. I have used safely remove hardware a dozen times and reconnected to no avail. W.D. support is useless.

I installed WD Data LifeGuard Diagnostics for Windows and ran the software and it recognized that there is a WD Hard Drive, but where the model number is suppose to be listed it says (USB) and there is no model number present, also no serial number present and where the capacity is suppose to say 500 GB it says 0 MB and under the SMART Status tab there is a question mark followed by the comment "Not Available" instead of a check mark and the comment "PASS"

The XP hardware device manager has the WD External Hard Drive listed and shows it enabled and working properly, however when I open My Computer there is no Drive or Drive letter designation listed except for the typical C:/ drive.

I think my WD 500GB Ext HD may be damaged because it was making some weird scraping or scratching sounds like it was skipping and trying to read a bad sector continuously and unable to proceed to the next sector until I gently knocked it on the table and then the scraping sound stopped. the drive is now quiet and the PC plug and play detected a new device and loaded the proper drivers and said your new device is ready to be used, even though I can't access it with no drive letter to click on. I had a lot of information I don't want to lose on this drive and if I have a faulty disc drive I will have to use a data recovery tool or service to recover the data from this damaged disc.

Any suggestions you have will be appreciated, Thanks!

Have you tried in Disk Management Right-Clicking on the drive and selecting 'Change Drive Letter and Paths...' ? That is the normal way to change or add a drive letter to any drive, internally or externally attached (other than by network connection)?

I had the same problem and found that Windows was assigning the same drive letter as a shared network drive I had mapped previously (but was no longer connected to). I found that sometimes I could access the drive via this letter and sometimes I could not.
The solution was to assign it another (unused drive letter via Disk Management as RobJ suggested. Right-click My Computer, choose Manage, Storage, Disk Management, find the drive, right click it and choose Change Drive Letter and Paths...

PC and laptop will not recognize WD external drive. I have Window Premiun 7 new PC and noticed my pictures were being saved to My Pictures in PC. I do not want them saved there so unplugged WD then deleted...

Listen closely to the drive, if it sounds like it is clicking then it is probably not getting enough power through the USB. If you received a cable with a split dual USB plug for extra power make sure that both large USB plugs are in the computer while the smaller one is attached to the drive, this will give it enough power to start working. If it is not clicking and has plenty of power then it could be that it is mapped to a drive letter that is already in use. Under device manager, (right click my computer and select manage then click on disk management) If you see the device in there then you can right click on the bar graph representation of the disk and select to change drive letter and paths. This will allow you to remove the conflict and have it show up again.

I have western digital Passport 250 Gb external harddrive when i connect to my laptop it not showing........

Go to Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Computer Management Then go into Disk Management. Hopefully you will see a drive with a capacity of about 480 GB (plus or minus), that's your disk.
Right click on it and select change drive letter and change the drive letter to something that isn't in use.
If that doesn't work or it doesn't show up, go into the Device Manager from the Computer Management screen and see if there is anything under disk drives with a yellow or red symbol next to it. If so, right click it, select uninstall, then unplug the disk drive and plug it back in.

My computer recoginzes that the drive is connected because the WD icon shows up in the tray, but the drive does not show up in "my computer" as a drive. I have a Western Digital 5000 Essentials external...

You might have to go in Administrative Tools, Computer Management, Disk Manager ... from the Control Panel - and then Format that disk before it will be recognized as a Letter drive like D or G or something like that.

I have a WD and another brand of external drives. And I had a similar issue with the 2nd one - I had to format it 1st.

A customer of mine formatted a drive for Mac OS X and thus cannot use it in WIndows. Mac can read NTFS from Windows I believe, but Windows cannot read the Mac OS X format.

My laptop does not recognize WD3200ME

If your laptop will give your WD a drive letter, you can run chkdsk (Check Disk) from the Run prompt to verify that the drive does not have damaged sectors. many times chkdsk will fix minor errors allowing you to access the drive again.
Click Start, Run CMD, enter, then type: X: (X being the drive letter of the Seagate) then type chkdsk /r and hit enter. If it completes 100% try accessing the drive again.
If you cannot acquire a drive Letter when you plug in the WD drive, try going to Disk Management and assigning a drive letter.
Click Start, then Right click on My Computer and click Manage, then click Disk Management. See if your WD drive shows up in the list. If it does, right click on the larger box on the right and see if it will allow you to assign a drive letter.

Another option you may have is taking the hard drive out of the WD enclosure and either connecting it as a secondary drive in a desktop PC, or installing it into another external enclsure USB device, and try again to access the drive.

If none of these options work, your last option is to contract a Disk Recovery Service to acquire your data. They are usually very expensive.
