Slow excel on network

I have about a 20 user network but have a problem with one individual in most noticably in excel 2003. No other users have slow problems when opening, working or saving in excel except this indvidual. I have tried three diffrent versions of excel and changed your computer with no luck. I cannot figure out if there are some sort of temp files on server that is slowing her done or what the problem might be? She has seen other slowness in other programs and printing. Any ideas would be aprreciated.

Well I took another computer from a workstation and she encountered problem. She had problems with a computer and then we purcahsed her a brand new computer and she still has same problems with slowness in Excel and sometimes printing to local printer.

Yes, I have created a new user account on server and going to try and have her test with that account. It seems to me there is something tied in with her user account.

Thanks for input. We will test and keep you posted. Appreciate insight as this is one that has been plaguing me!

Once I created a new user in active directory and had her use it for a while, slowness quit. I figure her profile must have got corrupted.

Now can I delete that profile and recreate with same username/profile, etc. since it is connected with her exchange account?

How do I go about making sure everything is gone when I delete and where would I delete it from?

  • tvppd Dec 10, 2007

That link directs me to delete profile of user on Windows Server 2003. I need to delete the user account of a user/workstation. I can delete the account from Active Directory, but I want to make sure I delete all files associated with that logon on the server because obviously it is something on server that is slowing her down.

  • tvppd Dec 10, 2007

that will not help as i set her up as a brand new user on a new computer. She had the same results on another computer she had never logged on to before. No other users have problem with either workstation. It has to be something with user account corrupt on server.

Have her log on to one of the other computers on the network and see if the problem follows her.

Memory is used up by excel

I don't think you can. It's a real resource hog especially if youre using 2010/13. See below.

Excel 2003 is officially limited to 1 Gigabyte (GB) of memory.
This limit appears to be a limit on the working set memory used by the Excel process, which is the memory reported by Windows Task Manager.
Although Excel 2003 has a substantially increased memory capacity, many of the individual specific memory limits listed below have not changed in Excel 2003.

Excel 2007 is limited to 2 Gigabytes of memory for the Excel process under Windows XP/Vista (Windows memory limit).
This 2 Gigabyte limit is a limit on the Virtual Memory address space. Virtual memory used by a process is larger than the working set memory reported by Windows Task Manager, so the amount of useable memory under Excel 2007 is considerably less than twice that of Excel 2003.
Because Excel 2007 (Excel12) also requires more memory to store the indexes to the increased number of rows and columns you may not be able to load larger workbooks under Excel 2007 than was possible under Excel 2003. Memory Fragmentation may also mean that it is difficult to make use of all of the available 2 GB of virtual memory.

Many of the individual memory limits listed below have been removed in Excel 2007.

Excel 2010 is available in 2 versions: 32-bit (2 Gigabytes of virtual memory) and 64-bit (8-Terabytes (which is 8000 Gigabytes of virtual memory)).
The 32-bit version has the same memory limits as Excel 2007, but the 64-bit version, when used with a 64-bit Windows operating system, will have extremely large memory limits.
Note that the different versions of Windows Vista 64-bit and Windows 7 64-bit support differing amounts of RAM.

I have a user running Windows XP SP3 with Office 2003. The problem is Word minimizes suddenly without any notice and the user doesn't even have to touch or do anything. I have gone through repairing Office...

Change the keyboard, just in case the keyboard is randomly sending a sequence of characters (ALT+space+underscore, or Windows-D) that Windows interprets as "minimize".

Disconnect the network-cable, to prevent any computer "hacker" from having "remote-control" of Windows.
