Installing Firewire 400 on a Western Digital 500gb external My Book Pro

HI at Fixya !!!! I have a little dilema. i have read all manuals and tried this myself. i have as been told by the manual for the My Book Pro 500gb external drive i firstly have to install the usb cable to start with. i then have to put the firewire cable in and then that should be it turn on then it will be ok. i turn my computer on and all that happens is it hangs.Don't start up right. Also can you please tell me if the firewire cable once attached is quicker than usb. i would like the fastest of the 2. i would prefer it to be the firewire 400 if it is faster than usb. Can u please tell me how to connect the firewire cable properly so it starts up correctly like when usb is attached. I hope to hear from u soon

Don't connect the USB and firewire at the same time, use one or the other. In general for USB, for the very first connection, it is better to have the computer fully booted, and the MyBook spun up, before connecting the USB cable. After that, you can boot the computer with or without the MyBook connected or turned on. For the firewire connection, check your manual for the correct order of connection and power on.

USB and firewire 400 are roughly comparable. USB is theoretically a little faster, but you will see little difference. There are other factors that can affect your actual performance, so your best answer is to try a test yourself. Time a copy of a very large file, and a copy of a folder with a very large number of files.

I have bought Western Digital 1TB external hard drive. but my window xp is not finding that hard dirve. how can i conect and find on my xp.

You will probably need to install the drivers that came with the drive for Windows to see it. Check out the instructions that came with the unit and it will walk you through installing drivers and connecting the drive to your computer.

Can I Repartition WD 500GB My Book Firewire Drive w/DATA ON IT?

You will need to have a third party software to achieve this. I recommend norton partition magic. I have been using it in the same scenario as yours and works. they now support firewire. Easy to use and gets the job done.

Hope that helps.

My external won't mount, the light works but it won't mount to my power book G4. help!

I opened up the harddrive and noticed that the copper magnetic film strip right above the USB port entry was lifted from the metal. I pressed it down and plugged the drive back in and it worked.

you just have to unscrew the drive on the 4 front side and two small ones on the side using two different phillips. then make sure and register the Western Digital drive inside because it has a seprate warantee. my acomdata is already out of warantee but if the drive ever fails again, I can have it replaced by Western Digital until 2011.

Western Digital Hard Drive will no longer mount

HI. So I had this problem twice with the same hard drive. I didn't have the money to replace the hard drive the first time, but this time I did, so my ultimate solution to offer is to purchase a different HD and migrate the data from the current one.
How did I get the drive to turn back on so I could get the data migrated to the new HD? Persistence! I kept disconnecting and reconnecting the drive, making sure to shut the drive down by pressing the blue button on the front until the drive powered down. I disconnected, waited for some time (between ten and 20 minutes) Then I reconnected the FireWire cable first, and the power cable second, waited for it to mount - and eventually...
Wow am I happy. I'm going to run a series of diagnostics on this one but I'm probably going to retire it. Too bad because 500 gigs is a lot of space to loose, but this being the second occurrence makes parting all the easier. I mean, my entire iTunes library is on this thing!
So, just keep trying - plug the drive into the computer, then connect the power cable and wait for it to come on.
I'm running Mac OS 10.6.4 and an older machine 10.4.11, both of which were able to read this drive before, the 10.6.4 had the problem initially, then both machines had issues. Ultimately the 10.6 machine was successful with a FireWire 400 connection.
I hope this helps!!

Death of a drive

That sounds like a head crash. You should take to a service center and get it fixed and/or inspected.
