Vacuum is making a loud noise

My vacuum started making a loud noise and it smells hot. I checked the belt which is fine and there is nothing stuck in it. Help

-   I am having similar problem. I checked the inlet near the brush and it was plugged up with carpet fibers and dirt. I cleaned it out and the noise stopped.....for awhile. The vacuum is making the same loud humming (air suction noise) even though there is nothing plugging up the hose. Thinking of taking it in to Sears.-   edwardsd24

Is the smell rubber or electrical. If rubber then the belt is slipping and needs to be replaced, they stretch after awhile. Also is the brush roll turning freely, or is it bound up, it may have to be replaced. If the smell is electrical, then probably the motor is going bad and will have to be replaced.
