No picture, but I have sound. It has a horizontal line through the middle of the screen. I used to be able to tap the tv and it would be fine but progressed to the line only but still with sound.

Vertical scan output section circuit fault. Absence of vertical scan causes the single horizontal line on screen. Horizontal scan output section is OK. Contact any service technician to troubleshoot the vertical scan output section circuit. If you wish to get some details; check the site linked here. Horizontal line fault to CRT based TVs are given.
Tap the top of the TV and if the picture comes on in full screen then it is possible that there are DRY SOLDERING points on the board.
use a good iron to touch up the soldering on the vertical and horizontal sections, the driver IC's. get help if you are not able to do the job but it seems a minor job.
Did you mean the picture is collapsed only in the middle horizontally(white line appears on the middle part of the screen)? If that is the case, maybe vertical IC failed or loose connection.
This is usually a bad elect capasitor or a bad solder connection on the vertical IC, The capasitors will be close to the vert chip..Sometimes you can clear problem with a light tap on the TV, if so then suspect bad solder.
Charlie
You have a failure in the vertical deflection circuit. This could be either a bad vertical chip, the power supply that runs the chip or a bad capacitor in that circuit. This is usually a repair best left to a professional. There is a small possibility that it could be bad solder connections. If genlty tapping the unit temporarily solves the issue you can try and resolder the pins on the vertical chip LA7841 is the part number. There is also a resistor 1 ohm 1 watt. If that resistor is open you can assume the IC is bad
does any one can send me the schematic of TOSHIBA 32A40? I have a vertical problem and I need to locate the vertical IC or trancistor.
I only see a horizontal line on my Tv.
The intermittent horizontal line is cause by a loose solder connection in the vertical amplifier IC.
The IC is mounted on a heatsink nearby or around the flyback transformer.
The way to fix this failure is to add fresh solder where you see some brown spots on the circuitry that were cause by components getting hot.
Good Luck.
this symptom, sometimes called the tube light effect, it is characterised by a bright thin horizontal line across the middle of the screen. this symptom is caused by a breakdown in the vertical deflection circuit. hence maybe the trouble maybe in the vertical oscillator, amplifier or output circuits. but if all i have said is not clear to you, better bring it to a qualified tv technician. good luck!
