Cannot turn the receiver on - when I push the on/off button, the standby button goes green, and the words begin to display across the front screen. As soon as RECEIVER displays, the unit turns off. The standby light goes red and flashes. I have tried several times and the same thing happens. Even unplugged and plugged back in to possibly reset. Why can't I turn it on?

I have a Pioneer PL-S50 turntable that I used to have connected via the phono jacks on my Technics amplifier. I now have a Denon AVR-689 that doesn't have ''phono'' jacks. Is the phono output of the turntable compatable with the audio signalling expected on the Denon's aux or CD audio inputs? I have heard that the phono output is substantially different than the normal audio output of say a CD and that a pre amp or other conversion may be necessary. Not wanting to let the smoke out of either the turntable or the Denon I'd like to hear if this is possible before trying.
