Question about Gateway GT4016 Desktop PC

Computer won't boot up...

My computer isn't really booting up.

If I leave it alone off the power for a while and then try to boot up. It will start off slow running the fan then the blue light will light up and the monitor will come on. It will get to the Gateway Screen that says F10 for Boot Selection or F2 for Bios then stop. Then it will go back to just the fan running.

I left it for a really long time off the power... It started up the same way as before but got all the way to the Windows load screen before the monitor messed up and it was just the fan working again.

So whats the problem?

Okay all I could find was a windows recovery disk that they gave me. Because my computer was the display model they cleaned it then made a recovery disk for me. I put it in there. Didn't really help much.

Based on the advice of another person I unplugged the power strip cord and power cord from the computer. I let it sit for a few hours and connected everything up. I got to a screen asking me if I wanted to start windows normally or safe mode and other options. I picked safe mode thinking it was the best bet... It started to load up then it stopped. It's like the computer stopped trying and it froze. Then it was back to just the fan working again.

So does that mean it's something with the power supply?

I noticed my GT4014 computer wouldn't come out of standby mode. When I hit the space bar to wake up the PC, the computer would start the hard drive and cooling fan, but the monitor and keyboard wouldn't "wake". I had to hold down the power button to shut down. When the computer was brought back on up the first time after the failure, I noticed that this took longer and appeared to be doing a lot of writing of files. The event viewer didn't display the reboot information as usual nor did it show any alerts or problems from the failure. The PC would continue to have the same problem in standby mode and when restarted. The only way I could get the computer to come back up was to unplug the power cord and wait (10-15minutes). Simply powering off the PC would help. Intially the past restore point were all available. A couple of days later I noticed that they were all gone. I ended up doing a chkdsk on the hard drive and the system found problems. I went ahead and did a chkdsk with fix on bootup. The system said that it fixed the problems 100%. After this fix completed the monitor and keyboard went out again. I have only gotten the system to boot to the BIOS one time since chkdsk fixes. All my startup attempts have failed to even get past the motherboard beep check. I don't even get a power light, but the hard drive, DVD drive and fan will start.

    Virus or Hardware problem?

Alright I tryed to boot from a disk it didn't work.

  • Aftermath255 Jan 03, 2008

I've tried to boot from a disk it wouldn't. Just stayed on the Gateway screen.

My friend thinks maybe it got overheated and it's the processor or motherboard.

SOURCE: screen stuck on black with gateway logo

That indicates a hardware problem. From your description I would check the cpu or suspect it as being the problem. It can be a ram problem as well.

SOURCE: Pc won't post or boot

Hello, is it supposed to? on some machines you have to press DEL; others F8. Also, don't just press it once as you might be missing the point in the boot-up sequence where it 'looks' for some input from the kbd..... try and keep tapping the key as it's powering up. Regards, nicam49

I don't see my question but this could be a repeat. My screen states hit F2 or F12 to start but neither of my F keys will work. Please help. Thank you.

F2 or F12 or Delete gets you into the BIOS. Why do you want to go there? To boot normally just power down and back up. Leave the Function keys alone unless you have a reason to go to the BIOS. You can create a lot of havoc in there!

The only function key you might need is F8 which you keep tapping as the computer boots. That gets you into Boot Normally, Boot with Last Known good configuration or Boot to Safe Mode.

Bootmgr missing

Hello,

You are not alone in this problem. There are people who are experiencing the same problem. If the problem isn't hardware related (which usually isn't), then you can fix this problem if you have the windows DVD handy (I'm referring to the operating system reinstallation disc).

Insert your OS DVD to boot to the disc.

Just follow the onscreen instructions and click next. After that, you can find a link in the lower left hand side that says "Repair Your Computer"

Just click on it and the computer or OS will try to find the fix to the problem by checking the disc. The computer will automatically overwrite the missing bootmgr and it should fix the problem.

If you have any problems right after doing this fix, please let me know.

By the way, I suggest that you isntall RadarSync to your computer so that you won't have any problems with your computer's driver. Hardware drivers are very important and they are sometimes what causes problems in your computer.

Hope this helps,

Monitor will not boot up is reading no input signal

So either the computer isn't generating a video signal, the cable isn't carrying the signal to the monitor, or else the monitor isn't capable of receiving a video signal. To test this, first try a video cable that you know is good, in case your cable is bad, If it works with the other cable, the problem was your original video cable. If it still doesn't work, put your original cable back, and hook another computer up to the monitor. If the monitor makes the same message, the problem is with the monitor. If the other computer works when connected to this monitor, your problem was that the original computer isn't booting (which could be due to several reasons I will list below), or the video adapter is broken.Possible reasons for the computer not booting: bad power supply, bad power button, bad hard drive, bad memory, bad motherboard component. If you determine that it isn't booting, unplug everything except the keyboard mouse monitor and power cord, to see if that makes a difference. If it boots after that, something you unplugged was causing the problem, plug them each back in one by one, rebooting in between, and when it stops booting properly, the last thing you plugged in is causing the problem.

My acer aspire 5551 wont boot up i have a power light and the screec flicks when i turn it on but the screen stays blank

Sounds like a motherboard or maybe a hard drive problem.
It could also be a power issue. Check this first: Is the power adapter plugged into the wall? Is the computer end of the adapter putting out the correct voltage (~18v)?
Try booting without the battery.
Since this is a laptop, you really don't have the option of disconnecting your hardware. So I would try to boot it up and press the F2 key (or whichever key it is in an Acer) to get into setup.
Next try to boot it with a system disk (CD or DVD).
If all these fail, you are looking at a motherboard problem, in my opinion. You could remove the hard drive and try to start it just to be sure that the hard drive isn't causing the problem.

In stage 3 of the system updates it wont load the last stage and keeps re starting itself

We are not really sure if the Windows got corrupted or it might be the Hard Drive.
Please do this first.
Turn off computer.
Remove all power sources.
Hold down the power button for 20 seconds.
Use ac adapter alone.
Do this while the computer is off.
Hold down Fn then press power button to run PSA.
Wait and follow the prompts on the screen.
If all test passed then do these.
Boot up to F8 then select last known good configuration.
If no fix then boot back to F8 again then do safe mode then in safe mode try system restore from the time it was working fine.
If all fails you need to do factory restore.
F8 then select repair computer.
Follow the prompts select Dell Factory Image Restore.
Make sure all files been back up using an enclosure connecting to a different computer.

Laptop wont boot up

Stay away from Emachines in the future. Pay another $100 and get a real computer.
1. check that nothing is in the CD-Rom drive and restart the computer.
2.Shut down the computer. Unplug the AC power. Remove the battery pack. Wait 2 minutes or until machine cools.
try powering on comp on battery alone, then try with AC power alone.
