This document applies to HP and Compaq desktop computers with Windows XP, Me, and 98.
Use this document to make Windows and the CD writing software recognize the CD or DVD writer drive. Start at Step 1; do not skip to other sections until Step 1 has been completed.Step 1: Does Windows detect the CD or DVD drive?
Use Device Manager to determine if Windows is recognizing the drive:
In Windows XP, click Start , and right-click My Computer .
In Windows 98 and Me, right-click the My Computer icon on the desktop.
In Windows XP, select Properties , click the Hardware tab, and then click the Device Manager button.
In Windows 98 and Me, select Properties , and click the Device Manager tab.
Click the plus sign (+ ) next to DVD/CD-ROM Drives (or similar) category.
Do the following depending on what is listed in the DVD/CD-ROM drives category:
If a drive name is shown but is disabled (icon is marked with a red X, ), the drive has been disabled. Right-click the drive name and select Enable . You may have to restart the computer to complete the enabling process. The drive should work correctly once it has been enabled.
If the drive cannot be enabled, a required service or driver that the drive needs is not functioning or has been disabled. Click the plus sign next to IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers and troubleshoot any problems found according to any error codes in Device Manager. Resetting the BIOS may also resolve this problem.
If the CD or DVD drive is listed as normal but your disc burning software does not recognize the drive, Device Manager shows no special icons . Windows is detecting the drive but the writing software does not. Leave Device Manager open and continue with the next section Disc burning software does not recognize the original drive .

If you can still detect the device, you should try reinstalling the driver from your device manager. If still doesnt work , you should try to upgrade the firmware driver using proprietary software included in your dvd writer cd.
WELL IT SOUNDS LIKE IT WAS EITHER DISABLED.OR IT BROKE NATURALLY ON ITS OWN IF ENABLING DOESNT FIX THE PROBLEM THEN CONTACT THE MANUFACTUER AND SEE IF THEY CAN SENT YOU A NEW ONE.OR THE FINAL THING YOU CAN DO IS SEND YOU PC TO A COMPUTER TECH SHOP AND SEE IF THEY CAN HELP YOU. THE WIRES MIGHT BE FAULTY
if the cd has been written to already, you cannot write on it again. If the cd says CD +/- R, then it is not rewritable, look for a CD that says +/- RW. If it doesn't say either of those, a regular cd looks light grey, while a rewritable is usually a lot darker.
yours is a dvd reader and writer.....(i.e)it can read both cd and dvd and write both......now due to some problems dvd reader has been failed.....now you have to give that repair.....mostly it can be repairable......otherwisw if you warranty you give that and take new one from where you have buyed it......otherwise you have to buy a new one.....no other solution for this.... i am software engineer...and i have experience.....try this.....it will work 100%.....
It may be really dirty or just to old or has had laser failure.
There cheap these days, and CD drive with DVD Rom reading ability are like $20 to $30 depending on speed and brand.
A DVD/CD RW writer reader are also getting cheaper, around $60 and up usually.
And some advice. Dont by HP Pavilions. I've worked on alot and i find they have outdated parts cuz there remanufactured from older computers and you have a hard time upgrading due to hard to find drivers
You unit is faulty.. replace the unit with a new one. The CD Write Laser has probably "Burnt Out" or perhaps the "Quadrant Detector" has faulted.. either way a new unit is only way solve ya problem ... sry :(
