Gateway GT5408 PC Desktop

Old HD to a "new" PC

posted by hectorlp on Dec 03, 2007

Hi.

I want to add my old PCs HD (Maxtor model 9461ou6 40gb) to my recently acquired refurbished Gateway GT5408. The Gateway has a SATA HD. My old HD is IDE so I connected it to the cable the DVD uses.

In Control Panel, it seems like the HD is detected and a driver is located and installed by then I can't see it in Explorer. Furthermore, the DVD drive disappeared. If I remove the HD then the DVD appears.

I got tired of switching the jumpers back and forth to get the right MASTER/SLAVE setup. To make things worse, the HD does not have the jumper setting labeled and I'm not sure if what I found on the Maxtor (Seagate) site is for my model.

Is it possible at all to get this to work? If there is, I'd very much appreciate your help.

-Hector

Hello Karatela.

The PC has only on IDE slot. Sorry I forgot to mention it.

Also, the old PC used Windows 2000 and the new one has Vista Home Premium. I'm not sure if the old HD was FAT or NTFS but I mention this in case Vista has a problem with FAT.

About the firmware, I don't know about MP3s either but I looked it. I was unable to download anything for you. Since I'm at work, my time is limited.

Don't get me wrong for asking, but, is there any particular reason why you can't get the firmware?

Thanx.

I had the same problem hector, I don't know if you figured it out yet, but you can't have a hard drive and an optical drive (dvd/cd/ect..) on the same IDE cable. It just won't work, the only explanation I've heard that made much sense to me was that there is too much of a discrepancy in their relative speeds (I have not found out if that's true though).

Your only solution is to either keep switching the cable every time you need one or the other or to buy an adapter to convert one of the ide's to sata, usb, firewire, ect...what ever you do have an extra of.

I just got the cheapest hard drive case I could find, internal ide and external usb, I use it like a giant (lol) portable drive now. I used newegg (20 bucks w/ shipping), I'm sure you can find cheaper now.

Hi My name is Karatela.First make sure you have two ide slots on your motherboard.Just connect the ide 1 to your old hard drive and ide 2 to your dvd.Start your computer let your pc install the drivers when finished right click on my computer and go to manage,Now click on device manager,in that click disk drives and look if your old hard drive is detected. Also go to disk management and locate your hard drive if you dont want any data from your hard drive just format it from the disk manager.

Also one more thing you can do is switch on your computer start pressing F2 [Bios settings] Go in the device manager is enable your hard drive and in boot manager select your new hard drive as primary master.

Just remember to connect your dvd and hard drives separately as your new hard drive is sata then there should be a sata slot on your motherboard, connect it to that slot.

If you think i have helped you rate me and please send me any info about lisong mp3 player made by wilson.co.ltd firmware version 9.0.50.It plays the music but it shown only a white blank screen.I have mastered computers but mp3s are new for me.please help me and send a firmware upgrade for it from anywhere if possible my email address is talha_mostwanted786@yahoo.co.in or talha_mostwanted786@hotmail.com
