I am trying to decide whether it is worth it to upgrade and change my hard drive on my three year old Averatec 5500 or just get another computer. There is supposedly a slot for a hard drive upgrade (according to the info in the pathetic Averatec user manual) but no directions about how to back up and save the old c drive into and put it on the new upgrade. Do you know if this is done simply (like a RAM upgrade which is a no brainer) or requires some specific tools and software to complete the upgrade? Thanks for any help. Don
Hi Sunergos!
Replacing the drive is real easy! Diconnect the power and remove the battery. On the bottom of the laptop, lower right hand side, you will a panel, with one screw. Remove the screw, and lift the panel. The drive had a plastic pull tab on it. Lift up gently, and pull to the right. Don't lift too high. The drive will come right out. The Drive is held in a "tray" with four little screws. Remove those, and place the new drive in the same way. Just reverse the procedure, to install it, making sure the pins line up the with the female connector. Hint - wait 10 min or so before putting the drive in, or it won't recognize it. Newegg has a 120 gig drive for that lappy for $74. Upgrading my Averatec 5500, I ended up with a 3400+ CPU, 1 gig ram, and a 120 gig harddrive, that dual boots to Vista or XP, and is just as fast in either OS. Good Luck!

Some of my jpg pictures are becoming distorted with brighter tone of bands across them. Others have half of the picture shift a little of to one side so the top and bottom of the picture no longer align. Don't know what is causing such problem.
