Changing HHD on Averatec 5500

I am trying to decide whether it is worth it to upgrade and change my hard drive on my three year old Averatec 5500 or just get another computer. There is supposedly a slot for a hard drive upgrade (according to the info in the pathetic Averatec user manual) but no directions about how to back up and save the old c drive into and put it on the new upgrade. Do you know if this is done simply (like a RAM upgrade which is a no brainer) or requires some specific tools and software to complete the upgrade? Thanks for any help. Don

Re: Changing HHD on Averatec 5500

Hi Sunergos!
Replacing the drive is real easy! Diconnect the power and remove the battery. On the bottom of the laptop, lower right hand side, you will a panel, with one screw. Remove the screw, and lift the panel. The drive had a plastic pull tab on it. Lift up gently, and pull to the right. Don't lift too high. The drive will come right out. The Drive is held in a "tray" with four little screws. Remove those, and place the new drive in the same way. Just reverse the procedure, to install it, making sure the pins line up the with the female connector. Hint - wait 10 min or so before putting the drive in, or it won't recognize it. Newegg has a 120 gig drive for that lappy for $74. Upgrading my Averatec 5500, I ended up with a 3400+ CPU, 1 gig ram, and a 120 gig harddrive, that dual boots to Vista or XP, and is just as fast in either OS. Good Luck!

My Beyond Micr 250GB external HHD is not showing up on my PC running windows 7 and I have 2-1TB SATA HHD installed.

try other usb port, or other computer and see whether the hdd is detected. If still not, try to go to device manager ( ), and then assign a drive letter to the hdd. After that, try to access it from Computer, if not able to access it, format it (use quick format) and then use asoftech data recovery program to recover lost files.

When I plug in my WD 1TB drive it powers up and goes right back off. Any ideas or suggestions? It is 2 years old and has worked fine until now.

WD has had major issues with one of its chipsets (pitted IC due to thermals).

Have you tried the hhd on other machines and got the same issue?
Again, it is just a serious issue WD had with their "My Book" products.
Don't fret, the data is still on the hd and you can utilize it once you get the proper pcb for it.

I have a serial ATA mobile disk drive, model # HD-338-SSC. My computer no longer recognizes the device and the power button on the device displays the standard green light. I tried connecting the device to...

Most of these problems are associated with an I.C. on the board that governs the HHD. Unfortunately, the chip gets pitted (overheats) on the GaAs and is ruined. The green light (LED) on the HHD will turn on as it is getting power but the main chip that controls the HHD no longer works thus rendering the HHD inoperative.

Bottom line, get a new external drive. Should you get the same model or something similar to what type of electronic hardware you have, you can remove the new HHD and put your old HHD in its place and you will see that all of your data is still intact.

Since the HDD has rejected easy repair by the most appropriate tools, I recommend you recover the data and replace the drive. I've been through this many times for clients.

You did all the right things.

Lacie hd problem

This is a pretty old thread, but I just figured out the work-around for my Lacie drive with the same symptoms. I took the Lacie case apart to find a pretty standard 3.5" Seagate Barracuda drive inside the case. If you pull the actual hard drive out of the box, you can either purchase a new external hard drive adapter box ($30-80) or install it into a tower computer. I installed it into an older G3 tower and it mounted right up. I decided it wasn't worth investing in a six year old hard drive, so I will be purchasing a new drive and pulling the data off the old one.
