My (factory fitted original) PSU which has just died is rated at 305watts for my Dell dimension 5100 system. I want to replace it with the same part but everywhere I read suggests that 305 watts is under powered: even though this is the manufacturer's supplied rating. The manufactuer's part is very quiet and a 450 watt unit I have tried is far too noisy - that is why I want to use the original part (it also revved up when it needed to rather than maximum cooling all the time). But could it be inadequately powered? I haven't really upgraded my system but I will be connecting an external hard drive.
