My Powershot A620 will not power up from batteries

My Powershot A620 will not power up from batteries (newly recharged and new Duracell alkaline)- I have applied a transformer to the external power input and voila all works fine - Any ideas welcome please.

If it's working using the external power input, then it's likely a problem with either the batteries, or the battery terminals (they may need cleaned or "bent up" a little to make better connection).
