Microwave Door Switch Problem?

I have a GE Spacemaker XL microwave, model #J VM13398W002.

When the microwave door is closed, the unit will not start cooking (all display lights and timer are operating fine). When the door is lifted up by the handle while closed it will sometimes start cooking, but when the handle is released it will stop again. I'm sure it's a door lever or monitor switch, but I'm not sure which one is most likely to be the problem (upper lever switch, lower lever switch, cam switch, monitor switch, or the top secondary door switch). I doubt it's a thermostat switch.

That model number has too many digits after the JVM. Could it be JVM1339BW02 or JVM1339BW002?

If one is bad, it's probably the bottom switch, whose wiring goes back to the power relay, thermostat, or fuse, depending on eact model.

The switch with thin wires going to a ltitle connector on the board is the door sense switch. That's not likely your culprit.

I usually recommend you replace them all while you're at it.

It sounds like it may actually be a loose or misaligned door or door switch mount.

GE models have a very helpful "mini-manual" hidden inside the unit behind the control panel. Handy in troubleshooting.

GE Spacemaker XL - fan stopped working, light will come on and timer will count down.

either the magnatron fried , or the fuse fried... either way the microwve has to be taken down and opened up.
If you have the serial number , GE will send you a replacement magnatron (but will not service the unit for you).
contact GE and they will take care of you... the magnatrons are warranted for like 10 years....

GE spacemaker XL microwave oven blowing fuse

If it went dead almost immediately after pressing the Start pad, that's usually a shorted high-voltage capacitor.

If it went dead several seconds after pressing the Start pad, that's usually a failing high-voltage transformer.

If it goes dead or blows the house fuse or breaker (or GFI) when you plug it in or open or close the door, then there's a problem with a door switch or door switch mount.

If it's intermittent or random, it may be a bad connection, usually on the control board or a loose fuse holder, or even an intermittent fuse.

You can find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number from the tag on the oven here.

My microwave won't heat

The real clue here is strangely enough the table not turning.

All units have a switch in the side (usually the right side) of the cabinet--when door is opened it allows the unit to work but will not heat or the table (usually both) will not work.

It has to be got at from the inside of the unit--little plastic holder with the switch which looks like a leaf switch.

What I have seen several times (including a unit I own) is that from countless opening and closing the door the holder may break or even melt and the contacts on the switch no longer are in position to work when door is open.

The purpose of such a switch is simple---it prevents the unit from being used if the door is OPEN.

Not a hard or expensive repair

Whenever I open the door on my GE Spacemaker XL mircowave the internal fan goes on. This is the fan that goes on when the unit is cooking and not the exhaust fan. It goes off as soon as the door is closed...

That is normal for it to spin for about a second or so becuase of switch changeover but should not remain on constantly when door is open. Have it checked up if it does not happen like the way I described it.

GE Spacemaker Microwave

If there is power to the unit and it is not doing anything at all, check the internal fuse. If it is lighting, fan works, and panel works, but not heating at all, the two possible causes are a faulty door switch and a bad magnatron. You can pull the top cover off of the unit and check all of the door switches (there are 2-6 of them all on a common rail, me normally closed)). If the door switches all check out, replace the magnatron, diodes, and capacitor.

GE Spacemaker XL 1400 Microwave

Generally, the most common causes of a failure to heat are:

- bad door switches or door switch mounts
- loose connection at the magnetron
- problem or loose connection on the control unit circuit board
- bad magnetron or other high voltage part
