Question about Toshiba TP55F80/81 55" Rear Projection Television

1 Answer

Gun problem I have a TP55F80 rear projection TV that worked fine until I moved it to my basement. After moving it something has happened to one of the guns. I did the convergence with little help. It appears that one of the guns has changed. I have pin cushioning from the top and bottom from one gun. This causes a double image in the center of the screen about 2 inches apart and thing are way off at the top and bottom where the pin cushioning takes place. There are no service centers locally. I?m afraid if I take this to a service center I will have problems moving it again. Do you have any advice other then 44-magnum target practice? Thanks

Re: gun problem

Bill, the picture tells the story, you`ve lost convergence, either the convergence IC`s have failed or theres a slight chance that one of the convergence plugs got partially pulled out when you moved the set, of course the latter would be the easy fix, remove the back of the set and check all the plugs by pushing down on them or of course if you see one laying out of the plug just plug it back in. If the IC`s have failed or possibly the solder is broken on the IC`(s) and you are proficient with a soldering iron you can try re-soldering the pins, be prepared to lay on the floor for awhile there are 18 pins on each IC. check the plugs first (unplug the AC cord first), let me know if you know how to solder & unsolder and we`ll go from there, not much room on here to type in everything in one reply. I just moved my 42in. Toshiba rear projectiom Tv from my basement to the upstairs and now my convergence is off. The red tube cross is low on the manual adjustment and will not go up to the other colors.IT...

It sounds like you jostled the red CRT gun when you moved the set. If the convergence adjustment still moves the red cross hair the the circuitry is okay. Your red gun needs to be realigned. This requires a service call unless you want to attempt it yourself. It is fairly involved and requires some specific tools as well as using the service mode on the remote to reset the convergence after the gun is repositioned.

I have an Hitachi 43FDX15B. The tv worked perfect

sounds like the convergence is out of whack. you will need to call a local repair shop and see if they can realign the color guns inside the unit. this is actually a really common problem with moving a rear projection screen.

No picture, no sound, power light stays on

this is a tricky one but i would say it could be a pannel inside that has gone with all the moving of the tv about you could hav just moved something inside that shouldent hv moved ( its easley done ) best thing to do is take it to a phillips dealer.

The problem is probably that one or both of the STK convergence chips have failed. These control the convergence coils around the red blue and green guns and are the most common cause of sudden convergence problems and the protection circuit shutting the TV down when turned on.

I can post details of how I replaced these on my Toshiba 40WH08B. Yours should be similar.

Hazy yellow spot in the left lower corner of the screen

It could be a cob web inside the tv or something laying on one of the guns, like a dead bug. If it's a cob web, you should be able to move the tv a little side to side and see it change from the moving air current. I would remove the back and vacuum off the lenses of the guns and look for cob webs. It's safe to touch and clean the lenses, just don't touch any electronics. If this doesn't fix it, it's probably fluid starting to cloud up in the guns or IC chip problems.

The alignment you need to do to realign your TV is called "setting the convergence". All projection TV's have 3 color guns (one red, one blue and one green). When you move a TV or josstle it, these guns can get misaligned and need realignment. This is definitely something an average user can do (you don't need a TV repair man to do it for you). It is a very simple procedure (most TV's have an option in the menu to do this, just look for convergence adjustment). What you want to do is use the remote to get all 3 colors to overlap completely (you can only move one color at a time). Some TV's have squares on the screen that you must align, others have plus signs. If you can't find it in the menu on your TV or if you can't figure it out on your own, you can look for a manual at Hitachi's website that will walk you throught the process for your TV.
