May have a real quick fix for you.

Power off, remove the memory module(s). Reseat the memory modules, and see if it doesn't come up for you.

Acer Travel mate 7730 os xp laptop shuts down

make sure processor fan is working fine. you may hear the sound of fan on the left side of the laptop. and make sure its not getting heat soon. If the fan is not working you need to replace the fan. If if gets heat soon that means you have to put processor cooling paste.IF the fan is working fine and the processor heat is normal, then you need to re-fix the RAM. Then it will work fine..ok

Viao PCG-GRX650 won't shut down fully

DaveBaker,

Here are a couple of tips that I've collected that may address your problem.

Go to start>run>then type in "cmd" without the quotes. this will bring up the command prompt. next type in the following command: "shutdown -s" without the quotes again. This should tell your system to shutdown your computer entirely.

Next
Try doing this. Hold down "ctrl" and left click "shutdown". This skips some windows XP shutdown procedure and should do the trick.

And, finally

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=831431
You cannot log off, restart, or shut down your Windows XP-based computer This article talks about an issue with Norton 2003 incompatibility.

Would appreciate any feedback as to which of these worked for you.
Thanks much!
