Re: Protected

Oct 23, 2008 I have the same "Protector" problem. There is mention of this on Sony's website:

Follow the steps below to troubleshoot if the word PROTECT or PROTECTOR is flashing on the A/V receivers display.

  1. Check the speaker wires and speakers for proper connections.
  2. Reduce the volume level. IMPORTANT: If the receiver is played back at maximum volume level it may enter the protect mode. Maximum volume listening will cause the receiver to run very hot and may drain the output capacitors.
  3. Disable the surround sound option if both the A and B speakers are being used simultaneously.
  4. Ensure the top of the receiver has proper ventilation to keep it from overheating.
  5. If the message only occurs when using a DVD player, the sampling frequency may be set too high. IMPORTANT: Some receivers provide compatibility with the higher sampling frequencies through alternate connections. Consult the owners manual for specific information.
  6. Unplug the AC power cord for about 1 to 2 hours to reset the output transformers.
If the issue is still unresolved, service may be required. The Sony® eService Web site at can assist you in obtaining service from a Sony Service Center or locating a Sony Authorized Servicer.
I followed their "advice" to my unit's been in the shop for a couple weeks.
I called for status today 10/24/08 and was told that there is a "backorder on a part". My repair
shop cannot estimate when the "part" will be available.

SO...I suspect a component failure and since Sony does not have the part, the questions are:
1. Is there a delay in Sony getting the needed part from the manufacturer (if it's not Sony)
2. Are there so many occurrences of this problem that Sony can't keep the the "fix part" in stock!!

Time will tell!

I have to replace 2 fuses 8Amp 125volts from a sony reciever, but I can't find it to buy , do you know any site to order on line or if I could use 8Amp 250volts?

fuses have different sizes even though they have the same rating's, the best remedy to do is, do you any stranded wire, cut one piece out of the whole strand and solder it on the fuse housing that will do the trick.

I got to replace 2 fuses from a sound board of a reciever Sony STR-DE935 but I lost the old one and now I don't Know how many Amp and volts should I buy to replace it .where I can get it?

If its the sound board both fuses are the same. but if they blew you may have a bigger problem like output transistors shorted. But try replacing fuses first if they blow again thats your problem. Good luck

Hi, on my Sony STR-DE935, Fuse #801 keeps blowing. Is it caused by a shorted bridge rectifier or one of the voltagr regulators, or am I looking in the wrong direction? Thanks, Ed Knight

It could be one of those but most likely it is a set of shorted output transistors. MP1620 MN2488 in most sony receivers.
