Hi, the error code that you have is a known issue from Microsoft that needs a registry tweaks. Error code means "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (code 39)". You can click on this link for your reference http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929461/en-us

To resolve this problem, remove the affected filter drivers. To do this, follow these steps:1. Click Start, type regedit in the Start Search box, and then click regedit in the Programs list.
If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password, or click Continue.
2. Locate, and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Caution There can be many instances of the registry subkey that is mentioned in step 2. You must make sure that you are in the appropriate registry subkey before modifying the UpperFilters and the LowerFilters values. To verify that you are in the appropriate registry subkey, make sure that the Default data value is DVD/CD-ROM and the Class data value is CDROM.
3. In the right pane, right-click UpperFilters, and then click Delete.
4. Click Yes to confirm the removal of the UpperFilters registry entry.
5. In the right pane, right-click LowerFilters, and then click Delete.
6. Click Yes to confirm the removal of the LowerFilters registry entry.
7. Exit Registry Editor, and then restart the computer.

This will surely help you resolve your issue. Good Luck!!!

Thanks

You can solve this problem by going to start, then run, type regedit. open hkey_local_machine, then system, then control, then class, then 4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318, once in this go over to the right hand side and delete upper filters and then lower filters. restart your computer and your dvd/cd-rom drive will work properly, if you look in device manager there will no longer be a question mark and it will tell you all is working correctly.

Hello Neeta,

This is Romeet,i will try and help you with this.Seems like a driver problem or a Burnt DVD ROM however lets try the easiset option first. Do you know how to boot your laptop into " Safe Mode " ? ( Press F8 key just after your laptop has turned on and the " TOSHIBA " logo has disappeared, from the list of menus choose " Safe Mode " and it will start loading windows. I am assuming you are using Windows XP..it will ask you if you want to continue loading windows xp in safe mode select yes.then:

Right Click the " My Computer " icon on your desktop and select " Properties " the system properties window will appear.

Go to " Hardware " and select " Device Manager "

Scroll down to the part where you see " DVD/CDROM Drives "and click the plus ( + ) sign next to it to open the submenu for it

From that submenu, uninstall HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GMA-4082N and select yes.

Restart your computer, and let me know if windows picks up the drive again, wait for a while before starting any processes as the new driver allocation / installation should happen automatically so do not interfere with that process.

Hope this helps

I had the same problem and Solution #2 didn't work. I ran a registry scan (RegCure) and found that a file, elbycdio.dll was missing in Windows\System32 directory, i googled the file, and downloaded it into the directory and restarted, voila!

SOURCE: Drive for HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GMA-4082N ATA Device

First thing I would do is go to My Computer or just Computer (under Vista) and see if drive exists. If it does show up it could be dirty and needs cleaning. If this doesn't help replace the drive. If it doesn't exist, Widows didn't see the drive at all and you need to pull it out and verify connections and possibly clean the connectors on DVD player. Plug it back in and Windows should say new drive found, if it doesn't I'd replace it.

you need to do
1) confirm the dvd driver works ok at other same laptop or find a usb dvd drive adapter to check it works well or not, the dvd driver damage if not
2) check the dvd interface pins (no damage or disconnection) on the motherboard, there is hardware problem that you can not see or heard any lights and driving sounds when the power on

First go into Setup (usually F1,F2 or del) at start-up. See if your drives show up there. With Windows running, right click My Computer, left click Properties, left click Hardware, left click Device Manager, left click DVD/CD-ROM drives. Also check IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers. Do the drives show up there? If they do right click on drive and left click Update Driver. If they are not there go back to System Properties and left click on Add Hardware Wizard. This will search for devices. It may ask you to insert Windows CD which of course you can not do because the drives don't work. Try a different drive. When you cleaned out your computer did you delete or uninstall Office? That may be what caused this problem. None of this may work but it is a starting point.
