I have a Maytag portable air conditioner (about 5 years old) model M6P092SB. When it starts up, there is usually a slow, heavy laboring sound that increases in frequency and eventually goes away (in about 5 minutes), Is this a sign of a compressor starting to fail? Is it time for a service call? After the temporary laboring sounds, it runs well and cools normally.
When the compressor shuts off most of the freon goes to low side(cold) when it starts..it has a lot of freon to move and it works hard and you hear it loud after it has moved most of the freon over to the high side, the sound is less so not to worry it's normal if it clicks when it starts then you worry

Testimonial: "Helpful explanation. However, my other (same model) air conditioner does not have this start-up noise, so I wonder why they are different."
