The red light indicates a hardware error, and could have many causes. If you get three red lights the unit will stop working. The probable cause is overheating, which causes the circuit board to warp thus cracking the solder and disconnecting components.
Microsoft have recently made a $1bn provision against their 2007 accounts to deal with faulty XBoxes because it's a manufacturing problem. They have also extended the warrantly on all XBoxes to three years, even if they only had one year warranties when they were sold.
The new XBoxes have a different chipset which operates at a lower temperature, so if you can get it replaced under warranty that would be ideal. The new XBoxes have also got a proper HDMI socket, rather than a combo VGA output.
In the meantime, some users have got their units working again by blocking the vents with a towel to overheat the unit again, which sometimes gets the solder to run and reconnects the component, but that doesn't sound like a long-term solution! Microsoft have also produced a fan system which you can buy as an add-on to keep the unit cooler.

Take out the dvd drive and then turn on the power to see if the one red light comes on. If it doesn't come on after taking out the dvd drive then that means the dvd drive is shorting out the main board.
If you take out the dvd drive and the one red light still comes on, then that means its a problem with the main board and your 360 would need to be serviced.
DO NOT OPEN THE CONSOLE!!!!!!!! Microsoft will fix it for free!
Alright, the one red light means it has a "Hardware Failure".

Hi, I fix xbox 360's, the three red lights is usually caused by a bad connection between the gpu solder balls, if you still have the microsoft security sticker beneath the faceplate then microsoft will repair it up to three years since you bought the console. There is a lot of false information on the net about "The X-clamp fix", it will get your console working again, but it is only a temporary fix, results vary between 3 months to a year if you are very lucky, I have came up with another method which has been successful on a test unit for about 6 months now! Just remember, all the x-clamp kits that you can buy off ebay are temporary fixes, none of them are permanent as they claim!
it,s worth a look at the xbox forums on the internet regarding this.
dependant on how many red lights you have, the console has overheated. or you have a A/V output fault.
Look on the xbox 360 forums sites for further Information.
Call 1-800-4MY-XBOX. All XBox360 consoles have a 3-year limited warranty protecting against the 3 red lights. Since the XBox360 hasn't even been out for three years yet, yours should still be under warranty and will be replaced for free.
I do not know how to fix the three red light problem manually by yourself, however microsoft have extended the Xbox warranty to three years for the redlight problem, so if i was you, i would get in contact with microsoft, and have them send you a new xbox out or repair it free of charge. if for some mad reason they do not do that for eaxmple, you have touched the band seal. call 1800-4my-xbox and they will help you
Good luck and please rate
