My Dell Inspiron 6000D Laptop LCD WSXGA+ matte finish screen has very dim image unless I press and hold the lower border of screen with my thumb while powering up and if I ease off slowly it will stay lighted up normally for hours until I turn it off. I have removed the screen and reseated all connectors but the problem remains. I can buy and replace either the inverter, the screen, or the screen with inverter included. Do you know if replacing just the inverter would work or is it likely the backlight and should I buy just the screen or screen with inverter included? Does a separate inverter need to be for WSXGA+ or is the resolution not important?
Sounds like your inverter has loose components on the pcb. Replacing inverters is not that costly and a relatively easy repair. Read about CCFL tube failure here.

You can just replace the inverter as well

It's a faulty backlight (screen).
Replace screen (same dell part number) with inverter, otherwise screen can be dark.
Here is how Dell part number looks (green):

If it's a faulty inverter, then yes, but have to be exact same part number inverter board.
Also if applying pressure backlight works and in case it's a faulty inverter, then you should see dry joint or something wrong visible on it, but DON'T TOUCH IT WHEN IT'S ON, BECAUSE INVERTER PRODUCES 700 VOLTS!

I would like trying just the inverter to save money compared to buying a screen with inverter if it could be the problem alone and my screen/backlight might be okay. Wish there was a way to determine that. I have laptop apart with screen hooked up and have to press and flex the lower edge to get a startup with normal screen (if I hold and ease off very slowly the screen will work hours until I shut down). Problem is the lower edge is where the converter is so could be that or the screen/backlight just above it. Shopping for the inverter, is it important it be designated WSXGA+ like my screen, or will any inspiron 6000 15.4" LCD Inverter work? Thanks so much.
To all who have helped with advice! Thank you so very much! I took the chance buying a new inverter for about $10 on ebay... it didn't have the mounting hole in the right place (though advertized as the exact replacement part), so I drilled a hole where needed on one end, allowed the other end to be held just by pressure, and I have a screen that works like new! You all have been great!!!
