When putting a new ribbon in, once I snap it down the wheel with the characters, it won't type. If I lift the ribbon up it will type but it is suppose to be snapped down.
Did you make sure that the end pieces are engaged into the brackets in the part facing you. Also if the correction tape is not loaded onto the ribbon prior to installing it, it will do that too.

Put in a multi-part form, type if the carbon is OK the problem is with the ribbon. Look at the ribbon if there is an impression on the ribbon but no ink transfer the ribbon is very ols, if there is no impression then the ribbon isn't lifting. THere ix a 2" black gear on the right side of the printer it should move easily if not wiggle it back and forth they get tooth for tooth with the drive gear.
1 or 2 reasons: Your ribbon cartridge is not properly snapped in place...i say this because this happens to me when my cartridge was not properly snapped in..or 2: the exposed ribbon should be placed behind the daisy wheel and directly behind those two raised hooks that looks like bent football gollies.and ALWAYS tighten your ribbon wheel once you snap it in place. there's a small yellow or red wheel on the top left of the ribbon cartridge.turn that until the ribbon is straight and even..i really hope this helps.
You probably tangled the ribbon or the lift-off tape (LOT) in the printwheel, so it can't spin properly. It can happen with any modern typewriter, but it should be easy to fix:
Turn the typewriter off.
Take the ribbon and LOT out.
Push the hammer assembly (the part that sticks up through the space between the ribbon cartridge and the ribbon itself, when it's installed) back toward the paper to make sure it's snapped into place.
Install the LOT, making sure it's taut, so it doesn't catch in the wheel. It needs to go behind the wheel, between it and the paper.
Do the same for the ribbon. Turn the tightening wheel on the ribbon cassette and the LOT spool, so both are tight.
Turn the power back on. Part of that routine it goes through is to find the "home position" of the printwheel, so it knows where each character is.
The printwheel may not snapped in properly and going to it's home
position. .
Keep trying..it will spin to its home position when installed properly,
providing its not broken or bent. The other problem may be the ribbon
may have a bind in it or be out of ribbon. There is a wheel or hole on
the ribbon to mover to tightened it up. try that

Changing The Ribbon Cassette

key.
2) Hold the ribbon cassette on both sides and lift up the front portion (where the
ribbon is exposed) to remove the cassette.
3) To insert a new cassette, place the back end of the cassette on the cassette
holder on the carrier and gently press down on the front of the cassette unit it
clicks into place.
4) Turn the ribbon feed knob counter-clockwise again to take up any slack in the
ribbon.
5) Presss the CODE + = (SETTING) key.
Changing The Print Wheel
1) Move the print carrier to the center of the platen using the SPACE or BS
key.
2) You will see a lever on the right side of the carrier. Pull this lever toward you and
lift out the daisy wheel.
3) Place the daisy wheel into the slot with the characters facing the platen.
4) Push the lever back into position.
5) Press the CODE + = (SETTING) key.
It appears as though you have something that is preventing the print wheel from being locked in place by the release lever.
It should make a snapping or similar noise when it is locked down.
Get yourself a new ribbon Gen. Ribbon T-340 and a lift off Gen. Ribbon T-350 the lift off snaps onto the bottom of the ribbon and then both go on the typewriter there are two small tabs onthe ribbon cassette that go into notches on the front of the ribbon deck then the unit snaps down in the back held by the blue latch.
could be the ribbon is not lifting, do you see an image on the ribbon, also may be twisted inside the cartridge the shiny side has to be facing the keyboard.
This is a common problem with old supplies stored in a humid environment. Try leaving ribbon in an air conditioned environment for a couple of days to see if it helps. Otherwise buy a new sealed ribbon to try. Also push the hammer buy hand and see if it moves in and out freely and quickly. If not, the hammer needs some lubricant and or adjusting.
