Question about Toshiba 50H81 50" Rear Projection Television
I recently got a Toshiba 50H81 free. It will not turn on and has a blinking red light. Many people have said it is a "board" or that it needs re-soldered in a couple of conections. I want to try to fix it my self to save some money. What is the board and how easy is it to replace. How can I be sure thid is what is needs? I am comfterble soldering and working with small wires but I just don't know what the problem is. Please help with any suggestions. My television is doing the same thing. Red light is blinking intermittently. No sound and no picture. I checked the fuse the fuse is okay. Is it worth having fixed. To me the hardest thing is finding someone trust-worthy. No one is willing to come to my home because the only authorized Toshiba service centers are over 50 miles away. They want me to bring it to them. I'm afraid to take it that far and have them hold my television for ransom at some major expensive repair. I live in Manatee County, Florida near Bradenton. I bought the television in 2001 at Best Buy in Sarasota. Best Buy doesn't do repairs but will replace it if I had bought the extended warranty which I did but it expired 2 years ago. Any suggestions! Thanks for your time!! Matthew
The protection circuit has been activated and has taken over the power management. It means there is a shorted condition somewhere in one of the 8 or 10 major sections of the set.
The repair involves downloading the error codes into the Toshiba test box and from that determine what section failed and why; then troubleshooting and repairing.
It's a job for a trained tech with the right instruments. The problem could be something as simple as a shorted electrolytic cap in the ripple filters of the main power supply to a massive failure of the high voltage - which is expensive
