Targus Chill Mat Fan On Fritz

My Targus Chill Mat is having an issue with the right side fan. It does not run smoothly like the left side does; it has started running jerkily at best and makes an almost-but-not-quite grinding noise. I was initially able to solve this problem by banging on my desk, but it appears to not be a permanent solution.

Is there anything I can do to stop this, short of buying another one?

The fan rotor is stuck due to accumulation of dust. Take out the fan and clean it. Put a few drops of alcohol or lacquer thinner on the rotor/bushing assembly while manually turning its blades to loosen the hardened dirt until the fan freely spins like the good one. If it does not work, replace the defective fan if spare is available.

What are the other ports used for, and can I use them to run the fans?

Do you mean the USB-ports on your laptop? If so, than yes, you will need one free USB-port to connect the Chill Mat to.

Fan does not work

Check the power connection between the fan and the motherboard. The connector might not be inserted to the motherboard for power. I guess that if the fan does not work, you could not start your PC or it stops immediatly after you start it.

Targus notebook cooling chill mat. One fan has stopped running after less than 2 months. Can you help

I have the same problem, and I looked inside to see the cause- the interior part for the power is poorly made and comes loose. That's the reason for the one fan not working and it getting weak. Sometimes wiggling the cord or trying to stabilize it will help. But, as I learned the hard way, it will eventually break. Its a poorly made product, and I've had mine about 4 months now and it completely broke today. I opened it and did my best to stabilize the part, but... it will break. As best as I can tell, its a poorly made product and there is no permanent solution.

Chill mat

i have 1 as well and it broke too. this is http://computers.pricegrabber.com/laptop-accessories/m/1754767/

right?

if its the cord's thats broken, its most likely the switch, more specifically the soldering where the wire connects to the switch is prolly broken. i just sawed my switch open w/ a knife, and took a look. now if a wire is loose in the switch, u can either solder it back on, or (in my case i always have the fan on anyway cuz of my **** dell computer overheating) rip the wire off the switch completely and just connected it w/ aluminum foil.
