WD250GB DRIVE HiMy external 250 my book drive will not show in My computer and does not come up as found new hardware after disconnecting/connecting.Its been fine for months and now if connected at start up stops the pc from starting up.and if connected after start up slows the PC to a stand still.I have tried connecting the drive to 2 laptops both found the drive but came up with the same error message cannot access drive F due to I/O problem. As a last resort connected to PS3 and the drive would play all the mp3 files ok. So how do I resolve this??CheersChris

    Hi
Sorry but Ive already tried all your suggestions the cables are fine, and As I said I HAVE HAD IT HOOKED UP TO 2 LAPTOPS AND ANOTHER pc and got as far as being able to see the drive F but being unable to access the drive because of I/O or wrong profile error messages.
device manager reports that the device is working properly.
It slows the PC to a standstill and the only way to get back to normal is by unplugging the external drive and things then spring back to life.
The PC on startup with the drive connected gets to the xp screen then goes black/ grey unplugging the device and windows starts.
    Cheers
    Chris

    Hi
Why can we view all the files if we hook it up to the PS3, WHICH CAN SEE THE DRIVE AND ALL ITS CONTENTS but cannot do the same via a PC?
    Cheers
    Chris

Well if the cable was faulty it most likely would not jam your computer , the item is faulty no doubt about it , you will need to take it in to be serviced , or replaced , sorry ...

the ps3 will read pass bad sectors , the pc will not , it will continue trying to read the same bad sector over and over , hence pausing ur pc , the item is faulty , and not worth trying to fix ,

The first and easiest thing to try is to try a new USB or Firewire cable which are cheap enough at the dollar store, I paid $1.50 for mine. If that still does not solve the problem: look for the hard drive by right clicking My Computer and select Manage. Go to Storage and then Disc Management. You will see it here if the cable works whether or not the hard drive has errors. Sometimes if you have installed any programs that Windows uses for startup on your 500 Gig drive, It will come up as an error too. Try to remember if there was any software installed just before you got the error messages.
Let me know how this worked out. Feel free to add to this post if needed to help solve your problem.

Please re-read my post and tell me what of my suggestions you have tried. I understand that it is not under My Computer but would be under the path I mentioned if the cable is working.

Unfortunately, I was already rated as Thanks For Trying although I did offer continued help. I have been troubleshooting hard drives for many years and there are always more than a few things to try before giving up and getting it replaced. The reason your PS3 reads it is because the PS3 can pick up on all the non Window files, am I correct? Your hard drive is corrupted where Windows reads it to access all the files. You did say that you had an I/O error which can only mean a corrupted disk or a bad cable.

It should automatically allocate a drive letter to it. Go to windows explorer and hit F5 to refresh the display and you should see a new drive letter with the name of FREECOM next to it.

The WD does not show up

I had the same problem with my WD eBook external hard drive. I had to send it back to the factory at Western Digital and they replaced it free. From their support website, you can download the shipping label after you enter your serial number and other information. When drives make that kind of noise, its not a good thing and you have done the right thing already by trying it on other computers. Now you know it won't work.

External hard drive problem NEED HELP

Is this a new external with no data on it? If it is, it may need to be formatted.Go to disk management to see if the drive is there. It may need to be initialize first before you can formatted. If it has not been initialized, a message will pop up for you to initialized it. Once it is done, formatted--This should be done only if don't have any data on it.

External hard drive not recognized

You need to first narrow down the problem to either your PC or the external hard drive. Do you have access to any other PCs you could try connecting your hard drive to? (think friends, family, public PCs, etc)

If the hard drive works on other PCs, we know it isn't a problem with the hard drive.

If it turns out that the hard drive is fine and the PC is the problem, I would suggest going in to Device Manager and uninstalling everything USB related. Once you have done this, either reboot your PC or right-click inside device manager and "scan for new hardware". All of your USB related devices should reload their drivers automatically. You may want to try this both with and without the usb drive connected.

Another tip would be to try various USB ports.

Not showing my external hard drive

I HAVE SOLVED THE PROBLEM! or at least this works for my my book 1tb external hard drive. when i initially connect it i get the 'new device detected' pop up thing, but then it doesn't show on my computer. However, I have found that keeping the device pllugged into the computer but removing then replacing the power source from the device causes it to show up. That's all I did, unplug the power cord on the back and replace it. The computer says 'new hardware detected' and 'found my book mass storage device,' then it appears on my my computer tab. Hope this works with you as well!
