I have the same problem. MY DVD dual drive of my acer laptop used to work fine with DVDs and CDs. However, now it just reads and writes DVDs but refuses to work with CDs.

Should I assume I need a drive change? Or is it a software issue? I have installed fresh XP a couple of times.

    Pls Help

mine is an ACER 1640 and the drive READS discs but now refuses point blank to burn (NTI tells me that the disc has been burned but ...oh no it hasn't ; and the Windows Wizard refuses to believe there is a disc in the drive ...oh yes there is. Various people tell me I need a new drive - is it hard to replace? where can I be sure of getting the right unit....I live in France!

DVD drives and CD-DVD drives don't work unless you have a program to burn disks on them. The recent Acer models come with an NTI CD and DVD Maker program that works well; you should be able to find freeware programs for CD burning to try out your drive to see if it works. I couldn't access the drive once prior to having a CD program installed. You can find out exactly what drive you have with the free program Belarc explorer--tells you everything on your computer.

Actually, several months ago I bought an Acer el cheapo which had no CD or DVD burning software, and when I looked for my CD-DVD drive icon, IT WASNT THERE. Microsoft had me looking up all kinds of gobbledygook in their research--totally worthless (as usual). I finally found an article that said the drive wouldnt be recognized without the software, as it has no driver! (I had been looking up drivers for that particular hardware, eqully uninforative.) As soon as I installed a CD burning program, the drive not only appeared on my Computer as Drive E, but also worked!

Did you try axcessing the drive manually ??? Start > My computer > D:(you cd drive),, If it doesnt show up then the drive may be damamged. If it does you just need to associate the .ext with a program. Double click on the drive if a option box doesnt open up, you should see the audio files.. just right click on one and select properties. You should see the program the file is associated with. Just click change and select another program.

How to reomve a faulty CD/DVD drive from the Acer Aspire 5510 to enable replacement.

Hello
With a number of software manufacturers using DVDs to distribute their software releases, having a Acer Aspire 5510 DVD-ROM Drive is not only convenient but is practically essential to keep up with software releases. Unfortunately, if your laptop doesn't have a DVD drive, installing one isn't quite as simple as it would be if you were installing the drive into a desktop computer. This doesn't mean that installing a laptop DVD drive is difficult, provided you purchase one that is compatible with your laptop. 1. Check to ensure compatibility between your laptop and the Acer Aspire 5510 CD-RW Drive you purchase. The best ways to do this are to purchase your DVD drive directly from your laptop manufacturer, look for compatibility information on the drive's packaging or ask a knowledgeable sales associate. If buying online, make sure to read all of the drive's profile to check for compatibility information. 2. Remove the Acer Aspire 5510 DVD-ROM CD-RW Combo Drive that your laptop currently has. Flip the laptop over, setting it on a sturdy surface with the side that the existing drive is on facing you. Depending on how the laptop is designed, you should find 1-to-3 screws holding the drive in place; these screws may be on the bottom of the laptop or on the side next to the drive. Unscrew the screws and set them aside for later use. 3. Flip the laptop back over. Carefully remove the old drive, pulling gently yet firmly if you encounter resistance/ This will be the drive unplugging from the laptop's drive interface, so a small amount of resistance is not unusual. Once the drive is free of the laptop, set it aside. 4. Slide the new Acer Aspire 5510 Combo Drive into the empty drive port. Make sure that you press it all the way in so that the drive will plug in to the drive interface. Once the drive is in completely, replace the screws to secure the drive. 5. Boot up your laptop. Your operating system will detect new hardware and will load temporary drivers for the DVD drive; insert the driver disc that came with the drive to install the manufacturer's drivers in order to get optimal use out of your new Acer Aspire 5510 DVD-ROM CD-RW Combo Drive.
Hope this helps, if so do rate the solution Good Luck

Try the following:
  • Use a CD Cleaner (Or try with a soft cloth with a spirit)
  • Worse case scenario, you will need to take it to repair shop to change leaser head.

No Sir, Acer Aspire 4330 comes with different Optical Media Loadings, ( You can see a pdf file here )
Like;
  • DVD/CD-RW combo drive
  • 8X DVD-Super Multi double-layer drive.
But you have the first one, The Combo drive not the super so you can READ both CD's DVD's but can write only CD's.

Hope this removes your dilemma.

CD/DVD

Hi,

Try uninstalling the drive in device manager and then reboot, windows will automatically detect it again and re-install the drivers again for you.
The drivers may have been corrupt, if this does not work then the firmware on the drive might be corrupt.

Let me know how you get on.

Good luck....!

Aspire 3002 Nlc note book DVD Comboo is not recognised

Hi, sorry you might need to explain a little better, but i will try. The DVD Combo drive doesnt need any drivers to work, the only thing you need is somthing like powerdvd to watch films, if the drive is not reading cds or dvds and in device manager you have a yellow tag, probably next to Primary ide its windows drivers, but if you could explain in a little more detail will be happy to help.. All the best John
