Batteries--especially rechargeable ones--do not hold their charge forever. The batteries power naturally drains, even if you don't use them. Just recharge your ipod, and it should work fine.

The led light should change colors

I recommend you send it in, however if you really want to do it yourself and have the dexterity to do it

The battery in your iPod Shuffle has apparently reached the end of its usable life.
