I can already tell you that you have run face first into one of the reasons vista blows goats. I'd be willing to bet my best imaginary friends life that this is a driver issue.
Sadly vista has horrible support for any sort of aging hardware (or even new stuff but thats a different topic) and your best bet on solving this and other problems your about to have is to reinstall XP on your nice new shinny box. It will preform better and you won't have this sort of problem anymore.

As u windows vista , u simply need to connect the usb cable to the computer and it will configure the basic drivers .
u can use windows photo gallery to scan something .
open windows photo gallery > click on file > import from scanner n cameras > select your printer > click scan > click import > tag the picture > click import again .
it will scan the picture in your computrer , to view that , u can open recently imported pictures .
u need to do this because teh full feature software for vista will not work as it has a compatiblity issue.
