Craftsman air compressor 1 HP 12 gal 125 psi

Have had for a couple of years. Worked fine until recently. It is only going up to around 60 psi.

The Craftsman compressor is model #921.166400 (125 psi). I have had it for less than 2 years and have only used it a handful of times, mostly to keep tires up to spec and to blow out the sprinkler system in the fall. While using it for the first time with a pneumatic nail gun, as the pressure would fall from use it would normally start up and increase the pressure (about 100 psi). During this normal use the pressure would not increase more than 60 psi. Since then, maybe 2 weeks ago, I bled off the pressure to zero and then restarted the compressor. Now it only goes as high as 25 psi. I checked the oil level, it was a little low so I topped it off, but there was no affect on increasing the overall pressure build up in the tank.

This is probably an "oilless" compressor, it has "piston" with a thin ring of leatherlike material acting as a piston ring, the "cylinder" is an aluminum sleeve - what usually happens is the cylinder gets scratched from dirt or just wear or the leather ring deteriorates, that's why it will go only so far - the only fix for this is to replace the cylinder and the piston

My compressor will not go over 20 psi i have a craftsman 921 4 gal 125 psi compressor and it will not build past 20 psi i do not know how to get to the pistons and stuff what do i do?

The problem with compressors not building pressure is usually a bad pressure switch or bad regulator. Does the motor shut off at 20psi or does it continue running and not build pressure? If the motor continues to run with no increase in pressure, the you should go over the machine looking for air leaks from your regulator back all the way to the motor. Any air leak while the compressor is running can cause the pressure to "peak" way before the intended shutoff that it is regulated to.

1 hp 3gal craftsman compressor will only build up to 20lbs pressure in tank. how much compression should single cyl have on compression stroke?

A piston in any engine should be around 100 psi I would guess. A Chevy 350 used to be around 150 psi. An air compressor that only pumps enough air to reach 20psi is obviously too low on compression. Nailers and the like need 80 or more psi. The intake valves may be shot, the unloader might be stuck or piston rings are worn.

Craftsman 3 gal., 1.5 hp air compressor: won't auto shut off, builds only 40 lbs pressure, air leaks from the 2 holes in oil filler cap?

The compressor will not auto shut off until it reaches the preset pressure which is usually around 100-130 psi - your problem is leakage of air from the oil filler cap suggesting that you have a failed internal valve.

Compressor shuts off before reaching max pressure

Yes,but if the max is 125 you don't want to increase it above 110 and set off the pressure relief valve.

My Sears 1 HP compressor motor starts to slow down to almost zero RPM as pressure approaches 60 psi. Up until recently it produced 100 psi. Compressor rotates freely at shut down (no binding, etc). Is this...

IF IT HAS BELTS THE BELTS COULD HAVE BEEN LOOSE AND SLIPPING.. MOTOR COULD BE GETTING HOT DUE TO TOO SMALL OF CORD OR SMALL GAUGE DROPCORD. INTANK CHECK VALVE COULD BE GETTING CLOGGED NOT ALLOWING AIR TO PASS THRU IT. UNHOOK DISCHARGE LINE FROM HEAD TO THE TANK, THIS WILL ALLOW PUMP TO RUN UNDER NO STRESS AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS.

Craftsman 5 hp 30 Gal Won't build to more than 50/60 PSi

Most oilless compressors suffer from a short lifespan of the cylinder and piston ring. Unplug the unit and remove the cover to expose the cylinder and rod. Move piston to topmost position and examine the condition of the cylinder. If you see scratches or worn areas close to the top of the cyl. then most likely will need rebuild kit. (Not expensive) If cylinder looks good, remove the head and check the reed valves for debris or broken reed. Reed valve plate is also available as part with gaskets. To extend the life of an oilless compressor try not to use it in dusty or sandy areas as the bottom of the unit is open and tends to **** dirt into cylinder. Good Luck.
