It worked for awhile, then the computer stopped recognizing it.
I reinstalled windows media player 11, reinstalled the USB, installed the MTP porting kit from MIcrosoft, and even went to the Sony site for solutions and so far nothing.

MP3 players can only play music files in mp3 file format. You can download mp3 music files from the Internet toyour computer and then copy them to your MP3 player. For your CD collection, you need to convert your CDs tomp3 music files onto your computer or download them from the Internet and thencopy them to your MP3 player after you have connected the USB cable tothe MP3 player and the computer. You can do this using Windows Media player and Rip the CDs - Media Player willcreate a MP3 music file for each music track.Click on this link for instruction on converting musicfiles to mp3 file format :- http://www.fixya.com/support/r5798418-creating_transferring_mp3_music_files
Hi, It is not required to install any Driver for connecting the Walkman Player to the Computer. The Driver for recognizing the Walkman Player as a MTP Device is already installed in the Computer. You can install the supplied Windows Media Player 11 Software for transferring the files to the Player. You can either Drag and Drop the files using the Windows Explorer to the MUSIC Folder which appears as a Removable Drive or can use the Windows Media Player 11 for transferring. If the Player is not recognized by the Computer, try connecting to different USB ports and try re-installing the USB Driver from the Device Manager. Thank you for using FixYa!
This player accepts MP4, not WMV. Here's what you want to do: First, try the Sony Media Manager - it is available for free from Sony's website if you have lost your installation CD.
If the Media Manager won't recognize FLV, download a free program called Riva FLV Encoder. Convert the FLV files to AVI.
Once the videos are converted to AVI, use the Sony Media Manager to convert the videos to MPEG-4, and they will now be usable by your Walkman.
I had same problem with Samsung media studio not recognizing MP3 player. Here is how I fixed it. With the MP3 plugged in, I had to go into System/ Hardware/Device Manager and find the S3 driver under "Windows portable Media" and uninstall it. Then unplug and replug the S3 into the usb so that driver gets reinstalled.
Then I decided windows media player and samsung media studio are unnecessary for transferring music files to MP3 player.
Instead I go into Portable Media Devices from the control panel and just treat the MP3 player like a usb device. I copy folders of music and songs into the Music folder on the MP3. For me this is way easier than the Samsung music studio or Windows Media player.
okay, try plugging it in.
Go to Startmenu, right click 'My computer', and select properties.
Go to the 'Hardware' tab, then Device manager.
Down at the bottom, you should see a section of the tree that can be expanded, entitled 'Universal Serial Bus Controllers'
Find the Unknown device part. Select that, then go to 'Action','Uninstall'.
After un-installation, the computer might restart. Unplug your walkman.
When windows is back up, plug it in, and see if that works.
if not, I have an alternative solution
I had the same problem my mp3 would not charge. To fix connect the mp3 to your computer with the usb cable, go to Device manger open up portable devices you should see a small yellow triangle (this is telling you some thing is wrong) right click over walkman and choose up date driver .windows will use hardware wizard on the net to fix the driver. This worked for me i hope it fixes your problem
