yup, same problem. Win Xp automatically recognized the sound card and installed its own drivers, but I need the mixer to control sound I/O. The old Creative driver pack I used last time I installed win xp wouldn't install this time (it said I had no sound card installed), so I went to the creative labs site and downloaded a newer driver package, which includes drivers and apps (including surround mixer). The new drivers screwed up my playback of wav files, everything stutters. Removing the drivers solved the playback problem, but the mixer won't work without the creative drivers. I've tried to remove the windows drivers and install only the creative drives but win XP keeps reinstalling its own drivers.

Creative sound card! no sound!

Check whether you plugged in the speaker wire into the correct jack at the back of the computer (it should go into the green colored jack on the sound card).

Did you try playing a sound file? Does media player show the file as playing, but you can't hear anything? Or do you get any error? if there's any error, please mention the error.

If the sound plays but you can't hear anything, again, check the speakers are connected to the correct sound jack. Next, try connecting a pair of headphones or earphones (lower the volume before playing any sound  or music file).

If you still can't hear anything, click Start and type the command "dxdiag" in the Run box and then press the Enter key. In the dxdiag window, click the Sound tab. Check the Notes box, if it gives any error info. If your card is working, it should say 'No problems found." You can also test the sound using the "Test Directsound" button.

If you still can't hear any sound, you should check and reinstall your sound card driver manually after removing it first.

There may be other problems. For more information, check this nice blog post about sound problems.

Hope that helps.
Regards,
Raspal

Sound card wont play root media files

Hi Hughdog
well, Biostar mobos are know for a lot issues, but depending too, on the OS, windows XP I presume, go on safe mode, and uninstall all audio drivers, and disable on the BIOS audio. then start the PC, and install the audio card. or if is a internal audio reenable again, redetec the drivers, and install them according to the CD and drivers. you should see the play device now and play music correctly.
good luck
