I purchased a AT & T USBConnect 881 today at my local AT&T store. The salesman told me that I needed to install the software first before connecting to the USB port. Upon opening the box, there was not a disk included and the instructions included makes reference to a installing software. Can you advise if software is needed to install?

1. you may need to upgrade to new standard. 2. check with the Acer site for wirelss card updates if no updates I suggest you get the Trendnet wireless adapter ( it is a usb wireless G adapter that is compatible with today's wireless connections. 3. Your wireless card support 802.11b which is obsolete and will not connect. Here is the site for the Trendnet products. They can be purchase at the local computer stores for a small price and they work pretty good and have wide scan rate. up to 300 ft. http://www.trendnet.com/products/
First of all you might want to check the firmware on the card to make sure it is up to date. There are two different versions of the 881, a usb model and a PCMI card. To get your firmware version by using your communication manager, go to tools>diagnositics>gsm info. Look on the device tab. The firmware version is near the bottom. Then go to www.sierrawireless.com/support and check that version against what they have there. If that does not work, set up a new connection profile. Here is a link showing you how to do so. http://www.mattsilverman.com/2008/08/error-668-sierra-881-wireless-aircard-att-3g.html
It is remotely possible but will be very complicated. You will have to leave the computer with the Mercury powered up all the time and use internet connection sharing to provide access to the other computers. But also you will need to reconfigure your router as a dumb switch since your PC will now be the DHCP server. In short it's not easy and not practical - but it is possible.
This has happened to my brother in-law several times! I have fixed it twice myself by downloading the driver package from Sierra Wireless DO NOT USE THE ATT SOFTWARE, at least in an Acer 6920, as it trashes Vista beyond repair. Have no idea why they keep selling this, and why they keep telling him to do it all over again. Didn't work from the very beginning, and the ATT salesman did the first install, telling him that he would just have to restart it at home and it would be "all better" - yeah right, now we know why he doesn't work for a real computer company!!!
